## Simple Harmonic Motion - Piston - GeoGebraTube

The Geogebra program examines the relationship between a piston motion and a graphical representation. The graph shows students how the motion can be modeled with a trigonometric function. Students will be able to adjust the period, duration, and other parameters. In doing so they will see how the trig functions are calculated from the parameters.

## Rocket Activities - Altitude Tracking

A problem based learning activity where students use trigonometry to find the maximum height of the rocket. The activity suggest using a model rocket. I would have students build 2-liter bottle rockets that use water pressure (here are some instructions http://www.siouxbsa.org/pubs/c/98_waterbottlerocket.pdf). This activity also builds the connection between math and physics too!

## Let Add Some Trig: Numb3rs Activity

The activity relates to episode of the detectitve/math series "Numb3rs." In the episode, the detectives are trying investigating a counterfeiting ring. One of the engraving techniques used in banknotes involves nested sine waves, known as guilloche. Students will learn how to add and multiple sine and cosine functions, and discover/help students visualize trig identities.

Students learn about and use a right triangle to determine the width of a "pretend" river. Working in teams, they estimate of the width of the river, measure it and compare their results with classmates.

Students will learn to use trigonometry to find the distance across a river (either use a real river or make a pretend in the gym). Students will use there knowledge of SOH-CAH-TOA to find an estimated distance. In the activity there are multiple opportunities for assessment (before, during, and after). Student will learn to work together to solve this problem and discuss the mathematical ideas behind it.  The activity gives students the opportunity to use their trigonometry skills and how they can be applied outside the class.
