Helmand's most senior policewoman : 'My brother tried to kill me three times'

Helmand's most senior policewoman : 'My brother tried to kill me three times' | Underground news | Scoop.it

When Lt Islam Bibi decided to join the small band of female police officers in Helmand, she expected death threats from the province's ruthless heroin traffickers and the Taliban. She didn't expect them from her own relatives as well.

Far from being proud of her decision to risk her life for the service of her country, her family was apoplectic.

Not only was the work too dangerous, they argued, it was hardly fitting in their conservative corner of south western Afghanistan, where many see a woman working outside the home as scandalous.

"My brother, father and sisters were all against me. In fact my brother tried to kill me three times," Lt Bibi, who is now Helmand's most senior policewoman, told our reporter matter of factly.

"He came to see me brandishing his pistol trying to order me not to do it, though he didn't actually open fire. The government eventually had to take his pistol away."

As British and American troops withdraw rapidly from Helmand and leave the Afghan government to plot its own course, women like Lt Bibi are warily reflecting on the gains they have made in the 12 years since the Taliban regime was toppled --  Brave lady! - Fx

Reflections of a Newsosaur: How TV could suffer the fate of newspapers

Reflections of a Newsosaur: How TV could suffer the fate of newspapers | Underground news | Scoop.it

In pivoting aggressively from print to local TV, Gannett Inc. and Tribune Co. are embracing a legacy media model that could be headed for the same audience fragmentation and economic dislocation as the newspaper businesses they are trying to escape.

As detailed here yesterday, the two iconic publishing brands have announced parallel, billion-plus acquisitions that will boost their local broadcast holdings at the same time they reduce their exposure to the fraying newspaper empires on which both companies were built. Going further, Tribune is seeking buyers for some or all of a publishing portfolio that includes such prominent brands as the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times.

The long-time newspaper publishers can’t be blamed for being attracted to broadcasting. Television generated a record $49.7 billion in local and national advertising sales in 2012, while newspaper advertising revenues – which have been sliding relentlessly for seven years – ended 2012 at less than half the all-time high of $49.4 billion hit in 2005.

Though the transactions planned by Gannett and Tribune clearly reflect their confidence in the continued health of broadcasting, a look at the collapse of the once-indomitable newspaper business suggests that TV, in due course, could suffer a similar fate. We’ll review the accumulating evidence in a moment. First, here is a quick review of what happened to newspapers:...

From their OWN Mouth, in desperation and greed for fuel from Egypt. The Hamas Interior Minister spilled the beans on their TRUE Identity. The 100 Best, Most Interesting Blogs and Websites of 2013

The 100 Best, Most Interesting Blogs and Websites of 2013 | Underground news | Scoop.it

Apparently, as of March 2012 there were 644,275,754 active websites (according to Business Insider) and you know the number has done nothing but rocket up since then. Someone has to go through and find the best, most interesting web content to make it easier on everyone else–but what does this have to do with technology? After all, DailyTekk IS a tech blog, right? Yes it is, and to me, great web content has everything to do with technology; as TechCrunch pointed out, the world is being eaten by technology to the point that all journalism is becoming tech journalism. Here’s another way to look at it: what good would your smartphone or tablet be if you had no good content to read, watch, interact with or play? You’re welcome.... Treasure chest of blogs to check out...

Mohammed Hussain, one of nine men accused of running a child sex ring in Oxford, told the Old Bailey the 14-year-old girl had told him she was 17 before he had sex with her.

He also said he thought she was older as she drank alcohol and smoked.

He told the jury it would be “revolting” for a man his age to have sex with an underage girl.

The jury also heard defendants Bassam Karrar and Zeeshan Ahmed will not take the witness stand to defend themselves against child sex charges.

Karrar is suspected of raping an 11-year-old girl at the same time as his brother Mohammed, who testified last week.

Hussain, who faces three charges of sexual activity with a child, admitted he had sex with the complainant known as Girl 5 and described her as “bubbly”, “confident”, and “well developed” -- DIRTY, LYING, FILTHY SCUM!! - Fx : Read more @ :
