How your face could land you with a higher insurance bill - BT

How your face could land you with a higher insurance bill - BT | Un-Insured | Scoop.it
Insurers are experimenting with new photo technology that can detect people's lifestyle habits in order to help them price people's insurance premiums.
Jennifer Overhulse's insight:

I have to say this is one "development" to which I strongly object. Interpreting a photo to determine possible habits is ridiculous.  Barring any additional context from the photo itself, maybe one's nose is red and/or bulbous because it's cold outside.  Maybe one has fine lines around the mouth because of a repeated facial expression instead of smoking (think excessive duck face selfies :-)). My point is that photo analysis or facial recognition provides a limited view WITHOUT context.  The results are so subjective, they simply cannot be seen as reliable, right?  I hope.

Remembering Hurricane Katrina: 10 years later

Remembering Hurricane Katrina: 10 years later | Un-Insured | Scoop.it
NU-PC360 relates the story of when Katrina devastated New Orleans, told by some of the insurance professionals who lived it.
Jennifer Overhulse's insight:

I remember recruiting the CFO of Pan-American Life (at 601 Poydras in NOLA) to speak at a conference less than 9 months after Katrina.  His first person perspective was horrifying and hopeful at the same time. Hard to believe it's been 10 years.

Google Applies Pressure on Insurance Innovation - Re/code

Google Applies Pressure on Insurance Innovation - Re/code | Un-Insured | Scoop.it
Insurance is one of the last industries to innovate and fully embrace data, analytics and customer communication technologies.
Jennifer Overhulse's insight:

This seems a story of the phoenix rising...perhaps symbolic of the insurance industry right now.  Many times you will hear people say the best work is done in the face of adversity...the best solutions are found at the 11th hour.  To the point of this article, the insurance industry is facing enormous pressure from outside to evolve and adapt in terms of product innovation, business model and pricing flexibility, mobility and accessibility facilitated largely by technology.  Will this phoenix rise?

Will driverless cars 'eviscerate' insurance industry? - Chicago Tribune | Un-Insured | Scoop.it
Safer cars, including driverless ones, are likely to "eviscerate" the car insurance industry, according to one auto insurance analyst.

How IoT Will Change Your Relationship With Insurance

How IoT Will Change Your Relationship With Insurance | Un-Insured | Scoop.it
Between TVs, refrigerators, ovens, light bulbs, cars, fitness trackers and jewelry, it seems like everything these days is connected to the Internet. It’s..
Jennifer Overhulse's insight:

A valid question...and one that likely doesn't have an easy answer.  There are many smart home, connected car, connected human types of devices or solutions which face a common problem.  Actual implementation.  If the sensor, for example, must be placed on a pipe that is inside a wall in order to get the best results, how do you facilitate that in a house that has already been built?  In new constructions situations it's obvious.  For existing cars and homes, these new solutions don't fit so smoothly and it will therefore be harder to get a benefit, for insurance purposes or otherwise.

Will driverless cars be the death of the insurance industry? - Telegraph.co.uk

Will driverless cars be the death of the insurance industry? - Telegraph.co.uk | Un-Insured | Scoop.it
Driverless cars are coming and they will reduce the risk of accidents - so what does that mean for the future of the motor insurance industry?
Jennifer Overhulse's insight:

The period of time when driverless cars and traditional vehicles are on the road together will be the most interesting and probably the most litigated in recorded history.  Why take responsibility yourself if you can blame it on someone else?  In the case of driverless cars, liability could rest with the owner of the car, the maker of the autonomous technology, or the auto manufacturer (assuming these are two different companies), AND that is before you get into whether it is possible to involve the other driver/vehicle and all those interested parties.

Where is the real home for analytics in the insurance organization?

Where is the real home for analytics in the insurance organization? | Un-Insured | Scoop.it
To look at the logical location of analytics central within the insurance organization, it\'s helpful to understand who will be using and needing data analytics and BI reporting, and how frequently it will be needed.
Jennifer Overhulse's insight:

I see analytics as another layer entirely. Instead of thinking of analytics as a component or something that can be "strapped onto" core administration solutions, or integrated with core administration solutions, wouldn't analytics be more valuable as a layer that sits over core administration?  It would then be able to access and analyze all core administration level data inherently, and push it back out to the front lines on demand. #insuranceanalyticslayer

Jennifer Overhulse's insight:

This company obviously spent some time (and maybe money) putting this together, but it has very little point IMO.  Did anyone NOT know that the Internet of Things was having an impact on (at least the discussion taking place in) the insurance industry in 2015?  And, no sources for where or how these trends were identified.  At the end there's a plug...if you want to find out more.  Well, if I'm not familiar with Sensiple, I am not sure I want Sensiple to tell me more.  Likely more reliable sources for insurance industry trends...oy...
