Sílvia Cabral Teresa gives a paper on Clarice Lispector at the APSA in Iowa | The UMass Amherst Spanish & Portuguese Program Newsletter | Scoop.it

October 4-6: M.A. student Sílvia Cabral Teresa presented the paper “A hora do lixo: a ironia e o grotesco em 'A Via Crucis do Corpo', de Clarice Lispector” at the American Portuguese Studies Association's 8th International Conference at the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, IA. In her talk, Sílvia proposes an alternate reading of Lispector's collection of short stories entitled "A Via Crucis do Corpo" (1974), considering it an undeservedly neglected work by the critics. The purpose of her study was to illustrate how the author has engendered two main processes - the deconstruction of the sacred Christian ideation, and a critique of the role of women in Brazilian society - by indicating the mechanisms of the construction of a grotesque and ironic discourse.
