The next movie of the 8th Catalan Film Festival is “Bajarí: Gipsy Barcelona” (2013) by Eva Vila, and it will be presented by Irene Melé.

Tuesday, March 8, 6.30 PM in ILC S404. It will be in Spanish with English subtitles. Pizza and soda will be served!

Bajarí (2013, 84 min). As believed by the Gypsies, Flamenco cannot be learned in a dance school or by reading music. It is lived within the home; it is created at the bar; its artistry is perfected on the street corner. Bajarí goes to all those places, following in the steps of its two main subjects: Karime and Juanito. The young bailaora (flamenco dancer) Karime Amaya is working with some of the most talented up-and-coming musicians and dancers to create a show that blends the Gypsy Flamenco tradition with Barcelona’s Rumba tradition. Little 5-year old Juanito Manzano takes his first steps to dance in the show and earn his flamenco boots, despite kidney problems and against his parents’ wishes. Their adventures and experiences become a journey of discovery of this living tradition and create an intimate portrait of how flamenco’s legacy is kept alive within Barcelona’s tight-knit Gypsy community. A must see documentary for music and dance lovers, Bajarí: Gypsy Barcelona is a private window into the intimate world of this vibrant and living art form.

The Thatcher Language House offers students unique opportunity to maintain and improve their Spanish language skills and cultural knowledge in a residential community. Participants in Thatcher Spanish live among students engaged in one (or more) of our 6 language and culture programs and can take advantage of the common spaces, lounges and kitchen to socialize in Spanish. They meet once a week for a two-credit conversational culture seminar, SPAN 285. The Spanish Thatcher community strives to learn more about the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. We discuss social, economic, and political issues and current events relevant to Hispanic communities, watch Spanish language films, attend social and academic events on and off campus, and cook Latin American and Spanish foods together.

Some examples of past activities include: attending a photography exhibition on Cuba, a bilingual play about Frida Kahlo, a conference on linguistic equality, a campus wide scavenger hunt (in Spanish), a night of Latin dance instruction with the Ballroom Dance Team... We have also attended Holyoke Bound and volunteered with MIRA (Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition) to assist Spanish speaking immigrants applying for their Green Card. Some of our students have volunteered at Amherst Regional High School assisting ESL students. Others have been engaged at the Homework House in Holyoke.

Spanish Thatcher is also a great way to improve your speaking skills before studying abroad, or keep them sharp after coming back from a study abroad program...Typically, our participants are a mixture of native speakers, heritage speakers, Spanish Majors/Minors and students who return from Spanish speaking countries, or plan to study in one.

Sara Kippur to Present March 31st at U Mass "Writing It Twice: Self-translation and the Case of Jorge Semprún"

Sara Kippur to Present March 31st at U Mass "Writing It Twice: Self-translation and the Case of Jorge Semprún" | The UMass Amherst Spanish & Portuguese Program Newsletter | Scoop.it
On Thursday, March 31 Sara Kippur will be giving a talk entitled "Writing It Twice: Self-translation and the Case of Jorge Semprún" at 3:00 pm in Herter Hall 301.

In her recent book, Writing It Twice: Self-translation and the Making of a World Literature in French (Northwestern, 2015), Sara Kippur argues that self-translation can be understood as the paradigmatic example of world literature. Her paper will briefly sketch out the stakes of self-translation as a literary enterprise and then hone in on one example, the case of bilingual author Jorge Semprún. Through a reading of Jorge Semprún’s Spanish and French 1993 memoir Federico Sánchez se despide de ustedes / Federico Sanchez vous salue bien, this talk will underscore the dynamic differences, for Semprún, between translation and self-translation.

Bio: Sara Kippur is Assistant Professor of Language and Culture Studies at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Her research focuses on questions of translation and cultural exchange in modern and contemporary French literature. She is the author of Writing It Twice: Self-translation and the Making of a World Literature in French, published last year with Northwestern University Press, and co-editor of Being Contemporary: French Literature, Culture, and Politics Today, just out with Liverpool University Press. Her articles have appeared or are forthcoming in Yale French Studies, L’esprit créateur, a/b Auto/biography Studies, Contemporary French and Francophone Studies, and the Journal of Romance Studies. Her current book project probes the ways in which America has contributed in significant and varied ways to the French literary landscape of the mid-20th century to the present.

CATALAN FILM FESTIVAL: “TRACES OF SANDALWOOD” BY MARIA RIPOLL, PRESENTED BY CHRISTINA BEAUBIEN TUESDAY, FEB. 23

CATALAN FILM FESTIVAL: “TRACES OF SANDALWOOD” BY MARIA RIPOLL, PRESENTED BY CHRISTINA BEAUBIEN TUESDAY, FEB. 23 | The UMass Amherst Spanish & Portuguese Program Newsletter | Scoop.it

The first movie of the 8th Catalan Film Festival is “Traces of Sandalwood” (‘Rastres de sàndal’, 2014) by Maria Ripoll, and it will be presented by Christina Beaubien.

Tuesday, February 23 (6.30pm in ILC S404). It will be in English and Catalan with English subtitles. Pizza and soda will be served!

RASTRES DE SÀNDAL (‘Traces of Sandalwood’, 2014) is the adaptation of international bestseller _Rastres de sàndal_ by Catalan Asha Miró and Anna Soler-Pont, the tale of a Bollywood [1] star’s search for her long lost sister. The film begins in high drama as 6-year-old Mina (Vaibhavi Hankare) saves her newborn sister, Sita, from being drowned as an unwanted female, thereupon taking full responsibility for her care. But when their mother dies a few years later, their father hands them over to a woman from the city. Sita is left with nuns, despite her sister’s frantic resistance, and young
Mina is consigned to a brothel, from which she narrowly escapes. She finds work as a maid for a rich family, gaining an ally in Sanjay, the handsome son of the house. This melodramatic opener is suddenly revealed as a film-within-the-film, an autobiographical opus that Mina(Nandita Das), now a Bollywood superstar, is making with her director husband (the self-same Sanjay, now played by Subodh Maskara). The film marks the latest effort in Mina’s unending 30-year search for her missing sister (Aina Clotet). "Rastres de sandal" won a Gaudí award for best film, and the Círculo de Escritoires Cinematográficos award for best adapted script, and a Goya nomination.
