Hispanic Heritage Month is not just for marketing - The Boston Globe

Hispanic Heritage Month is not just for marketing - The Boston Globe | The UMass Amherst Spanish & Portuguese Program Newsletter | Scoop.it
National Hispanic Heritage Monthis overdue for a makeover. Originally established as a week-long event by President Lyndon Johnson, the celebration was expanded in 1988 to the period between Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. Since then, companies, politicians, government agencies, and institutions alike celebrate the contributions of a growing population of Latinos — now estimated at 54.1 million. But widespread cultural acceptance has a downside: What a heritage month that started as a cultural tribute has eventually evolved into a bland, crass, and often patronizing, opportunity. for businesses and corporations to tap into the growing US Latino buying power, Seeking a piece of Latinos’ buying power, estimated at about $1.2 trillion, Many times this backfires as marketers often treat typically resort to treating treat an ethnically and racially diverse group as a monolithic, homogenized cluster.

CONVOCATORIA No. 11(2013). TEMA CENTRAL "GÉNERO Y MIGRACIONES"

CONVOCATORIA No. 11(2013). TEMA CENTRAL "GÉNERO Y MIGRACIONES" | The UMass Amherst Spanish & Portuguese Program Newsletter | Scoop.it

Dolores Juan Moreno and Pau Cañigueral participated in the "Conference at Sant'Anna: Mediterranean Visions" in Sorrento, Italy | The UMass Amherst Spanish & Portuguese Program Newsletter | Scoop.it

June 13th-14th, 2014

Dolores Juan Moreno, organizer of the panel "Mediterraneo poetico",, gave the talk "Asfalto y seda. Visiones mediterráneas del viaje en la poesía de Aurora Luque" The paper analyzed two visions of travel in Aurora Luque's poetry from a Mediterranean point of view. It focused on the study of two poems, "Road Movie" and "Taller de sedería" and the main goal was to discuss how she balances -in her lyrical approach- the pursue of knowledge and the encounter with the Other. Pau Cañigueral Batllosera presented the paper "Josep Pla: la creación del paisaje de la Costa Brava" that studied Josep Pla's involvement in the promotion of tourism in the Costa Brava, a promotion fueled by Francoist regime. Josep Pla took this opportunity to transform the description of the landscape into a literary device. This endeavour  allowed him, on the one hand ,to dodge censorship and, on the others, it contributed to his success as a Catalan writer.

The UMass Amherst Spanish & Portuguese Program Newsletter | Scoop.it
