Excel·lent participació als actes de Sant Jordi a la Universitat de Massachusetts que va cloure l'escriptora i editora resident a molts pocs quilòmetres d'Amherst, Liz Castro, amb la presentació del seu últim llibre What's up with Catalonia?: un llibre col·lectiu que aplega 35 articles en anglès sobre la cultura, la història, l’economia i la llengua catalanes i que permet entendre a un públic internacional fenòmens com la manifestació de l’11 de setembre de 2012, el moment polític actual i la voluntat de convocar una consulta sobiranista. El llibre compta, a més, amb un pròleg del President de la Generalitat Artur Mas. A la presentació, Liz Castro va exposar els motius que la van portar a impulsar el projecte del llibre, va donar detalls molt interessants del procés de finançament de l'edició de What's up with Catalonia? per mitjà de micromecenatge i va exposar les seves reflexions al voltant del procés cap a la independència que viu el nostre país. El dia abans i coincidint amb la diada de Sant Jordi el poeta i pintor Anton Carrera va presentar el seu últim llibre de pintures i poemes Enlloc, i va comentar les traduccions que havien fet els estudiants del programa de català del poema número 20 del seu últim poemari. Els estudiants van quedar encantats amb les explicacions del poeta osonenc, que els va donar detalls molt il·lustratius del procés de creació dels 41 poemes i 41 pintures del seu últim llibre. Per acabar la seva intervenció, Anton Carrera va lliurar els premis a les tres millors traduccions català-anglès del poema número 20 d'Enlloc. També el mateix dia es va projectar la pel·lícula documental Enxaneta, que va servir per donar per acabat el V Cicle de Cinema Català de la Universitat de Massachusetts. La pel·lícula va ser presentada per una estudiant de doctorat catalana del programa d'espanyol a UMass, Irene Melé, després d'una presentació especial de l'acte amb motiu de la Diada de Sant Jordi que va constar d'una lectura bilingüe català-anglès de poemes de Salvador Espriu llegits per estudiants i professorat del programa d'espanyol i portuguès. La Delia Martínez, cantant i estudiant graduada del department, també s'hi va voler afegir amb la fantàstica interpretació a capella del poema de Salvador Espriu Per a una suite algueresa, que va popularitzar Marina Rossell als anys 80 amb el títol La barca del temps. Modern Poetry in Translation, de "The Queen's College" en Oxford, acaba de publicar una selección de poesía de Margara Russotto en inglés, traducción de Peter Kahn. La selección corresponde a su libro inedito Journal de Lavigny, escrito durante la estadía en el Chtâteau de Lavigny International Writer's Residence (Ledig-Rowohlt Foundation) en Suiza.
Spanish Honors Student Receives Honors College Award
Michelle Wade, a senior Spanish Honors Student, has received the Honors Dean’s Award in recognition of the excellency of her Honors Thesis. Michelle has completed the first ever English translation of Tirso de Molina’s play _Del enemigo el primer consejo_. Her project, entitled, _Imitate your Enemy by Tirso de Molina: An English Translation from the Spanish Golden Age_ has been supervised by Professors Harley Erdman and Albert Lloret. Congratulations Michelle!

Emily Spring defends her Master Thesis PROTESTING BETWEEN THE LINES: CARMEN MARTIN GAITE’S FRUSTRATION IN WRITING VIS-À-VIS 1950s FRANCOIST CENSORSHIP
In _Protesting Between the Lines_, Emily Spring shows how Carmen Martín Gaite, an author who began her career during Franco’s dictatorship, expressed her frustrations with the restrictions she endured in spite of censorship imposed upon her work by focusing on two early novels: El balneario (1953) and Entre visillos (1958). Spring analyzes Martín Gaite’s novels as works affected by censorship, and search for subtexts and hidden meanings in order to argue for their status as texts that contain a subversive message. “Historians Behaving Badly: The Perpetual Polemics about the Spanish Civil War” Contemporary debates among Spanish historians and intellectuals about how to appropriate, interpret, remember and memorialize the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). In English Sebastiaan Faber is Professor of Hispanic Studies and Chair of Latin American Studies at Oberlin College, Director of the Oberlin Center for Languages and Cultures, and Chair of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives. "Struggling identity in a dialect contact setting"
Prof. Patricia Gubitosi presented a paper entitled "Struggling identity in a dialect contact setting", at the 24th Conference on Spanish in the US (SIUS), in McAllen, Texas. In her paper, Gubitosi examines language use among bilingual of minority varieties of the Spanish spoken in Massachusetts. "Celebrating the 24th Spanish in the U.S. and 9th Spanish in Contact conference just miles away from the Texas-Mexico border gives us pause to think about the incredibly consequential role that geopolitical borders play in the formation and struggle over linguistic identities. The theme selected for the 2013 conference highlights this role by inviting researchers to think about the multiple ways in which borders shape languages and their speakers. Kathrin Rosenfield: Greek Tragedy Meets Brazil: Antigone's "Spirit of Music" and "Rhythm" as a Trans-Cultural Experience
Luso-Brazilian culture has historically ignored tragedy as a genre, but Brazil's oral and musical traditions provide ideal components for a critical and creative investigation of the problems and potentials of this ancient art form. Popular poetry - performed, chanted, and danced - is still alive in the Brazilian backlands, the sertão. In the barren high plateaus of the Brazilian Northeast, poetry is still chanted and danced: festivities involving the local cattle traditions like Bumba-meu-boi [Bumba my ox] combine the choral processions of Ancient Greece with the medieval carnival dances of the wooden horses; pelejas [spontaneous verbal duels] are still practiced as a living genre of poetic insult: a combat opposing two chanting poets - just like Greek poets or medieval Minstrels; the rural communities of the Northeast still relish the chanted recitations of oral and written narratives, the cordel; and all over Brazil carnival reigns, with its large "body" of dancing and chanting individuals packed together by the moving-chanting-and-musical corpo de baile, the Chorus-line. This energetic Brazilian musical tradition has led to important urban and scholarly offsprings -- e.g., the Concretistas (Decio Pignatari, Haroldo and Augusto de Campos, and others) -- whose work has inspired many talented translators, or rather "re-creators," attempting to deal creatively with the complexities of ancient texts.The cultural challenges presented by this rich and complex encounter triggered a twofold trans-cultural experience: first, a scholarly approach to Sophocles' plays through Hölderlin's, Nietzsche's and Brazilian eyes allowed me to discover new meaning in the subtleties of the Greek text; second, a critic, a translator and a theater director (plus a cast of 36 artists) transformed this new approach into a vibrant stage production. The talk will focus on the multiple translations of poetic and scholarly artistry into body language, music and word on stage. Kathrin H. Rosenfield is a professor in the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. She has long combined literary criticism with an active career in the theater. Her book Desenveredando Rosa won Brazil’sforemost literary award in 2007. Different versions of her book on Sophocles’ Antigone have been published in Brazil and France. William Kearney defends his MA thesis _José Martí pedagogo: Educación y modernidad_
In his MA thesis entitled "José Martí pedagogo: Educación y modernidad," William Kearney considers José Martí's educative vision as presented in the newspaper articles and children's literature written during his New York City period (1880-1895). Particular attention is paid to the way in which Martí confronts the difficulties posed by the intersection between education and the phenomenon of modernity.

Professor Ameal-Perez, who presented a paper at the Annual Conference of the National Association of the Chicana an Chicano Studies in San Antonio Texas, was interviewed by Univision regarding Texas Senate Bill 1138. This proposition states that courses in Mexican American History and in African American history will not count toward a college degree in Texas public universities. Ameal-Perez, an expert in US Latino culture and literature, talked about the negative effects of this proposal: "If this bill were approved it would affect students' identity," he said. Francisco Fagundes receives the Medal of Honor for Culture and launches the translation of his autobiography in the Azores
Professor Francisco Fagundes published his own translation of his autobiography Hard Knocks: An Azorean-American Odyssey (memoir). No Fio da Vida (São Miguel, Azores: Ver Açor, 2013) was launched at the University of the Azores, São Miguel, and also at a special ceremony in Fagundes’s native city of Praia da Vitória, Terceira, Azores. On the occasion of the launching in Terceira, the City Hall of Praia da Vitória awarded him the Medalha de Mérito Municipal – Valor Cultural (Medal of Honor for Culture (http://www.cmpv.pt/index.php?op=noticias&pagant=&codnoticia=1230). Professor Fagundes was the keynote speaker at the II Colóquio de Tradução e Cultura – Traduzir: Repetir, Recriar, Inventar? Held at the Universidade dos Açores on the 18th & 19th of March 2013 at which he presented a lecture entitled “Tradução e Diáspora: Um Depoimento de Tradutor” (http://www.uac.pt/uploads/uac_artigo_plugin/ficheiro/programa%20dllm.pdf) In April 2013, the publisher Opera Omnia of Guimarães, Portugal will publish Professor Fagundes’s volume of short stories Do Sonho e do Pesadelo: Narrativas da Minha Diáspora no Vale dos Pioneiros. In July 2013, the volume A Diápora Portuguesa e Suas Resssonâncias (co-edited with Irene Maria F. Seminar on Gendered Spaces in Spanish Film and Theater at the NeMLA 44th Convention in Boston
Helen Freear-Papio (College of the Holy Cross) y Barbara Zecchi (UMass Amherst) co-organizaron un seminario con diez participantes para analizar los espacios en el cine y en el teatro desde un enfoque de estudios de género. Cada ponente resumió su charla durante cinco minutos para luego abrir la sesión a las preguntas del público. Helen Freear-Papio habló de los espacios metafóricos en la producción de la dramaturga Diana de Paco; Rossana Fialdini Zambrano (Kansas State University) interpretó el lugar de "la otra habitación", en la obra homónima de Paloma Pedrero, como ejemplo de la relación conflictiva entre madre e hija; Christina Beaubien (UMass Amherst) estudió el espacio de la violencia en otra obra de Paloma Pedrero, Ana 11 M, utilizando como marco teórico a Samuel Weber; Nuria Ibáñez Quintana (University of North Florida) se dedicó a los espacios de la negación de la memoria en Gracia Morales. Ramiro García Olano organized and chaired the panel "'Adaptaciones Perras': Unfaithful Film Adaptations vis-à-vis the Patriarchy" and gave a presentation on Leopoldo Torre Nilsson's adaptation of Beatriz Guido's La casa del ángel. In the same panel, Dolores Juan talked about the relationship between female poetic myths (such as Hipatia and Pandora) and their cinematographic translation (i.e. in Amenábar's Agora). Finally Gorka Maiztegui discussed the film Carmina o revienta as a recent example of the so-called quinqui genre. Spanish Thatcher Application Deadline for Fall 2013 is March 10th
Students interested in applying for the Spanish Thatcher Program for Fall 2013 must submit their applications before March 10th, 2013. [in the photo: A few Thatcher Spanish students huddle together during an unannounced fire drill during class-time] The Thatcher Language House offers a unique opportunity to live in a residence hall dedicated to learning a foreign language and exploring foreign cultures. Participants in Thatcher Spanish live among other students engaged in one of our 6 language programs in our residence hall and take advantage of the common spaces, lounges and kitchen to socialize in the language. They also meet in the classroom regularly during the week for a two-credit conversation/culture course, SPAN 285. Spanish Thatcher strives to learn more about the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. When the members come together, they discuss current events from various countries, watch Spanish language films, attend social and academic events on and off campus, and cook Latin American and Spanish foods together. ROBERT HERR defends his dissertation _Puppets and Proselytizing: Politics and Nation-Building In Post-Revolutionary Mexico’s Didactic Theater_
On Wednesday, February 27, Robert Herr defended his dissertation “Puppets and Proselytizing: Politics and Nation-Building In Post-Revolutionary Mexico’s Didactic Theater” (Prof. Luis Marentes, Dissertation Advisor). Puppets and Proselytizing: Politics and Nation-Building in Post-Revolutionary Mexico’s Didactic Theater” explores how Mexican artists and teachers collaborated to stage educational plays in working class neighborhoods and rural communities in an effort to foster revolutionary citizens. Infused with the ideology of the 1910 revolution, these works of rural and puppet theater offered pragmatic lessons designed to improve rural life and promote class-consciousness among spectators young and old. Through an analysis of play scripts within the context of their production and performance, the dissertation examines how educational drama became part of the state’s repertoire of civic festival and an important symbol of its adoption of socialist education.
