Domingo Sánchez-Mesa and Concha Gómez offer a 5-day seminar on DIGITAL CULTURES in SPANISH

Domingo Sánchez-Mesa and Concha Gómez offer a 5-day seminar on DIGITAL CULTURES in SPANISH | The UMass Amherst Spanish & Portuguese Program Newsletter | Scoop.it

Oct. 10, 2012. Tomorrow UMass Visiting Professors Concha Gómez (Univ. Carlos III of Madrid) and Domingo Sánchez Mesa (Univ. of Granada) are starting their Five Day Seminar on Digital Cultures in Spanish at Smith College.

The seminar will encourage critical reflection on the cultural and communication processes behind the configuration of the social & political imaginaries of cyber-culture, throughout the media landscape (cinema, television, videogames, Internet, trans-media, etc.). It will study the evolution of adaptation practices, analyzing the specificity of digital literary texts within the framework of new media (hyper-textuality and cyber-textuality), focusing on the new trans-media landscape as an emerging industry, and a new space of production and consumption of the editorial and audiovisual industries. Students will also be introduced to the roles and oscillating presence of women in the Spanish cinema industry, with a specific focus on the turn of the century context and the digitalization processes of such an industry (XX-XXI).

The event, cosponsored by the Dept. of Spanish and Portuguese, Smith College; by the Dept. of Spanish, Latino/a and Latin American Studies, Mount Holyoke College; and by the Program of Spanish and Portuguese, UMass Amherst,  is organized by María Helena Rueda (Smith College) and Barbara Zecchi (UMass).

The sessions will take place on October 11th, 18th and 25th, November 7th and 15th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in Hatfield 107 (Smith College).

Santiago Vidales successfully defended his MA thesis, “Correspondencias tempestuosas: Tres ensayos para acompañar a Sycorax y Calibán.” As the abstract indicates, “This thesis seeks to understand the representations and uses that [Shakespeare’s] Caliban has had in different spaces and historical moments. The anti-colonial interpretations of Roberto Ferández Retamar authorize us to read metaphorically the current socio-political situation of Latin immigrants in the United States through the perspective of The Tempest.”

She will discover how beautiful, and at the same how difficult, it is to truly love someone. (http://www.lomejordemi.es/)

Ana Rona defended her PhD dissertation, "Formación de intérpretes y políticas lingüísticas en la Provincia Jesuítica del Paraguay (S. XVII - XVIII). Her dissertation explores language policies regarding selection and training of interpreters by the Society of Jesus in the former Paraquaria (the Jesuit Province of Paraguay), through public and private Jesuit documents. Information regarding interpreters, their linguistic repertories and considerations about the quality of their work is then analyzed with relation to overt and covert language policies (Schiffman, 1996), in relation to the political and economic policies and goals of the Jesuit order, in all its contradictions. Her committee was formed by Prof. Patricia Gubitosi (chair), Prof. Jose Ornelas, and Prof. Edwin Gentzler (from Comparative Literature).

Stephen Small joins Phi Beta Kappa

Stephen Small joins Phi Beta Kappa | The UMass Amherst Spanish & Portuguese Program Newsletter | Scoop.it

We are very happy to announce that Stephen Small has joined Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest honor society. It is an honor for us to have one of our majors belonging to one of the nation’s most prestigious honor societies.

Stephen graduated from Easthampton High School in 2010 and this May will receive a dual degree in Spanish and Italian Studies, dual minors in Political Science and European Studies, and a certificate in International Relations. When asked why he decided to major in Spanish he told us:

«I majored in Spanish because the language opened up an entire world of intellectual inquiry to me in a way that nothing else had done before. I began studying the language when I was fifteen and was immediately fascinated by it. I wanted to know everything there was to know about Spanish, and soon I began teaching myself and spending most of my time studying grammar, history, and literature. In a few years, I became reasonably fluent and began studying French and Italian. It was this fortunate encounter with Spanish that led me to study in Spain and Italy for three semesters, make friends and contacts all over the world, study other languages, and decide on an international career. I can say without reservation that I do not know where I would be today had I not studied Spanish.»

During the summer he will engage in volunteer work and will then move to Italy, where he will work as an assistant language teacher in the public schools. His longer term goals are to return to graduate school for a PhD to prepare him for work in either academia or law.

Congratulations, Stephen!

Today, April 24 we will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution. in Herter 301 on April 24, 2014 at 1:30PM.

Short documentaries and real testimonies will be presented. We will also be listening to music from the revolution and Monique Smith, a Portuguese 240 student, who will be playing Cape Verdean music on a violin. There will also be red carnations just for you!!!!

25 de Abril was a military coup in Lisbon, Portugal in 1974 which overthrew the regime of the Estado Novo.

The name "Carnation Revolution" comes from the fact no shots were fired and when the population took to the streets to celebrate the end of the dictatorship and war in the colonies, carnation flowers were put into the muzzles of rifles and on the uniforms of the army. The Portuguese celebrate the national holiday of Freedom Day on 25 April every year to celebrate the revolution.

Margara Russotto publica el volumen Sustentación del enigma. Cuatro ensayos sobre Clarice Lispector_

Margara Russotto publica el volumen Sustentación del enigma. Cuatro ensayos sobre Clarice Lispector_ | The UMass Amherst Spanish & Portuguese Program Newsletter | Scoop.it
