Margara Russotto publica el volumen Sustentación del enigma. Cuatro ensayos sobre Clarice Lispector_

Margara Russotto publica el volumen Sustentación del enigma. Cuatro ensayos sobre Clarice Lispector_ | The UMass Amherst Spanish & Portuguese Program Newsletter | Scoop.it

Catalan Film Festival: "Catalunya Über Alles" (dir. by Ramon Térmens)

Catalan Film Festival: "Catalunya Über Alles" (dir. by Ramon Térmens) | The UMass Amherst Spanish & Portuguese Program Newsletter | Scoop.it

Tuesday, March 25t Herter 301 @ 6:30p

Director Ramon Térmens teams with screenwriter Daniel Faraldo to craft three stories centered on the topic of immigration in contemporary Catalunya. In the first tale, a traumatized ex-convict (Gonzalo Cunill) returns home after serving time for rape, but discovers that his sentence when he is shunned by neighbors, and the local gangs endeavors to destroy any chance for reconciliation with his former girlfriend. The second tale follows the experiences of a Senegalese immigrant (Babou Cham) who lands a job as a debt collector based solely on the color of his skin, and receives order to humiliate a staunchly right wing, anti-immigrant politician into paying up. In the final story, a businessman (Joel Joan) becomes a media celebrity after killing an immigrant caught burglarizing his home, finds his celebrated public image irreparably damaged following a scandalous revelation. The abandonment and demolition of an old house, with all its furniture, its plentiful library and its full load of personal memories, becomes the starting point for this film, which tries to portray some of the aspects of the new world. The camera peeps into the real state furore, turned into a showroom and promise of financial gain or of the paradise; into financial investment brokers, gurus and preachers of success and mythology. Personal and collective memory, dreams and desires will be ultimately transformed into pure merchandising.

Prof. Luis Marentes was interviewed for the Daily Caller on the Immigration debate

Advocates for increased immigration are spraying rhetorical gasoline into the immigration debate, partly because Democrats want to raise Latino turnout in the November elections.

One top advocate says President Barack Obama should invite previously deported people back into the United States, where they can compete for the low-wage jobs now being sought by low-skilled American natives and legal immigrants. [...]

President Barack Obama and White House officials are staging high-profile events to talk about deportation reductions, and are directing lower-level agents to release captured border-crossers, to ignore illegal-immigrants recently convicted of crimes, and to help transport border-crossing children to their parents in New Jersey and other northern states. They’re encouraging House Democrats to vote for an amnesty bill and denouncing GOP politicians who reject the push for immigration reform.

“Some would see in the outrage of the Latino population a mobilizing tool for the 2014 election,” Luis Marentes, an immigration activist and an associate professor of Spanish at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, told The Daily Caller. “This is part of the strategy of some of the immigration reform groups. Politics is data, facts, emotions, persuasion… [and] strategies of public performance bring attention.”

Spanish Major Ariel Stickles's speech presented to incoming freshmen at a Spring Open House

Spanish Major Ariel Stickles's speech presented to incoming freshmen at a Spring Open House | The UMass Amherst Spanish & Portuguese Program Newsletter | Scoop.it

” Good Morning everyone! My name is Ariel! I am excited to welcome you to the University of Massachusetts, and want to first congratulate you on your acceptance to this prestigious University! Today is a special day for both of us, and we are sharing important moments in our lives. You are all deciding if UMASS Amherst is the perfect fit for you, and I am celebrating my 22nd birthday today! I want to share some stories about my journey at this University, so please step onboard and keep hands and feet inside at all times.

I am a Senior at this University and hail from a small town in upstate New York named Copake. There are actually more cows in my town than humans, so coming to UMass Amherst was a big change. I am both a Spanish and BDIC major.  [...]

I took a class through the Latin American Studies department that allowed me to go on an Alternative Spring Break to Peru. The class met weekly to discuss the issues facing the country and the people, and in March my class and I boarded a plane to Peru. The trip itself taught me so much and because of the people I met during my time there I added my second BDIC major. [...]

During my Junior year I made the decision to study abroad in Seville, Spain. I can honestly say those were the fastest 5 months of life! With the support the the International Programs Office on campus I set up my financial aid, my classes and sorted all the odds and ends before my departure. By studying abroad I lived my dreams and had a once in a lifetime experience. A year ago, on this exact day I was celebrating my 21st birthday in Chefchaouen, Morocco. Because I went to UMass, looking back I can see how all the dots connected to get me there and to get me here today with you. Which reaffirms that picking up that sweatshirt was the best decision I have made so far in my life.

Birth of a Writer: Josep Pla's The Gray Notebook

Monday, March 24
5:00 pm
Herter 301

The Gray Notebook will be published in early April 2014 by the New   York Review of Books Classics Series.

The NYRB says...
"Josep Pla's masterpiece, The Gray Notebook, is one of the most   colorful and unusual works in modern literature. In 1918, when Pla was   in Barcelona studying law, the Spanish flu broke out, the university   shut down, and he went home to his parents in coastal Palafrugell.   Aspiring to be a writer, not a lawyer, he resolved to hone his style   by keeping a journal. In it he wrote about his family, local   characters, visits to cafés; the quips, quarrels, ambitions, and   amours of his friends; writers he liked and writers he didn't; and the   long contemplative walks he would take in the countryside under   magnificent skies. Returning to Barcelona to complete his studies, Pla   kept up his diary, scrutinizing life in the big city with the same   unflagging zest and humor.
Pla, one of the great Catalan writers, held on to this youthful   journal for close to fifty years, reworking and adding to it, until he   finally published The Gray Notebook as both the first volume and the   capstone of his collected works. It is a beautiful, entrancing,   delightful book?at once a distillation of the spirit of youth and the   work of a lifetime."

PETER BUSH is an award-winning translator who lives in Barcelona.   Among his recent translations are Ramón del Valle-Inclan's Tyrant   Banderas (for NYRB Classics), Teresa Solana's Crazy Tales of Blood and   Guts, Mercè Rodoreda's In Diamond Square and Najat El Hachmi's The   Body Hunter.

Catalan Film Festival: "Mercado de futuros" (2011), by Mercedes Álvarez

Catalan Film Festival: "Mercado de futuros" (2011), by Mercedes Álvarez | The UMass Amherst Spanish & Portuguese Program Newsletter | Scoop.it

Tuesday 03/11 at 6:30pm in Herter 301
"Mercado de Futuros" (‘Futures Market’, 2011). The abandonment and demolition of an old house, with all its furniture, plentiful library and replete with personal memories, serves as the starting point for this film, which tries to portray aspects of the new world. The camera peers into real state furor turned showroom and promise of financial gain (or paradise). In the hands of financial investment brokers, gurus and other preachers of success and mythology, personal and collective memories, dreams and desires are ultimately transformed into merchandising. Beginning with the Greek poet Simonides’ invention of the “memory palace” – in which memories are arranged in an imagined physical space – the film suggests that the recent flurry of credit-fueled property development has depleted not only national treasuries, but also the distinctive character of these nation’s cities and therefore their cultural memory too.

Mercedes Álvarez (Aldealseñor, 1966) is a director who infuses her documentaries with a poetic and emotional style. She completed a Master's degree in Creative Documentary at the University Pompeu Fabra of Barcelona in 1998, and three years later she worked as an editor on José Luís Guerín’s film "En construcción". In 2004 she directed her first film, "El cielo gira", which won critical acclaim at numerous renowned film festivals including the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival, the Audience Award at the Paris Film Festival, and the Premio Unosguardo for Best Film. Álvarez settled in Catalonia in 2007 where she began her work on the feature film "Mercado de futuros", co-produced by TV3 (Television of Catalonia) and TVE (Spanish Television). The film premiered in 2011, and, like her first film, won prizes at the world’s most important film festivals, including: the Prix Regard Neuf de l’Etat de Vaud at Visions du Réel, the Special Mention at the BAFICI, or the Premio Navaja de Buñuel of RTVE’s Versión Española.

In Spanish and Catalan with English subtitles and presented by Marta del Pozo. Pizza and sodas will be served.
