Santiago Vidales gives a talk at the Casa del Caribe - Santiago de Cuba | The UMass Amherst Spanish & Portuguese Program Newsletter | Scoop.it

July 2012-- M.A. student Santiago Vidales presented a paper on "Ariel, Calibán y Sycorax: identidad, unión y resistencia" for the 32nd Festival del Caribe at the Casa del Caribe. In his talk, Vidales argues that " la identidad latinoamericana se basa en las múltiples interpretaciones de los personajes forjados por Shakespeare. El ámbito literario y la interpretación literaria [son] de utilidad para explorar las implicaciones políticas, sociales y culturales de lo que han dicho varios intelectuales latinoamericanos sobre lo que nos hace particulares, diferentes y ‘latinos’"

Professor Regina Galasso Publishes Translation, "Lost Cities Go to Paradise"

Professor Regina Galasso Publishes Translation, "Lost Cities Go to Paradise" | The UMass Amherst Spanish & Portuguese Program Newsletter | Scoop.it

Professor Regina Galasso publishes her most recent book-length translation "Lost Cities Go to Paradise" with Swan Isle Press. The book is the first English translation from the Spanish of Alicia Borinsky's "Las ciudades perdidas van al paraíso."

"Alicia Borinsky's witty poems unsettle us by making us see the things that are most familiar with new eyes. No one understands how these poems work better than Regina Galasso. Lost Cities Go to Paradise is a tour de force, the product of a collaboration between a poet and a scholar/translator each at the top of their game."

Charles Hatfield, Center for Translation Studies, University of Texas at Dallas

"Tough city broads, wayward waifs, and other urban fauna bump and howl in Alicia Borinsky's rough and tumble prosaic poems of Lost Cities vigorously translated by Regina Galasso with the author."
Suzanne Jill Levine, University of California-Santa Barbara

Apply Now For Thatcher Spanish FALL 2016!

Apply Now For Thatcher Spanish FALL 2016! | The UMass Amherst Spanish & Portuguese Program Newsletter | Scoop.it

The Thatcher Language House offers students unique opportunity to maintain and improve their Spanish language skills and cultural knowledge in a residential community. Participants in Thatcher Spanish live among students engaged in one (or more) of our 6 language and culture programs and can take advantage of the common spaces, lounges and kitchen to socialize in Spanish. They meet once a week for a two-credit conversational culture seminar, SPAN 285. The Spanish Thatcher community strives to learn more about the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. We discuss social, economic, and political issues and current events relevant to Hispanic communities, watch Spanish language films, attend social and academic events on and off campus, and cook Latin American and Spanish foods together.

Some examples of past activities include: attending a photography exhibition on Cuba, a bilingual play about Frida Kahlo, a conference on linguistic equality, a campus wide scavenger hunt (in Spanish), a night of Latin dance instruction with the Ballroom Dance Team... We have also attended Holyoke Bound and volunteered with MIRA (Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition) to assist Spanish speaking immigrants applying for their Green Card. Some of our students have volunteered at Amherst Regional High School assisting ESL students. Others have been engaged at the Homework House in Holyoke.

Spanish Thatcher is also a great way to improve your speaking skills before studying abroad, or keep them sharp after coming back from a study abroad program...Typically, our participants are a mixture of native speakers, heritage speakers, Spanish Majors/Minors and students who return from Spanish speaking countries, or plan to study in one.
