Ultranet gone…so what now for Victorian schools? | Signmee Blog

Information and communication technology is rapidly changing in design, development methods, accessibility, mobility; and with all this, the expectations of our end users and customers are being redefined. The grand and ambitious desires of pumping money into one development basket (e.g. $180M Vic School Ultranet), specifying requirements, putting out a tender and building a software solution is becoming a thing of the past for businesses and schools. The option to ‘adopt’ existing cloud services and solutions is ever appealing, as services continue to pop up providing flexibility, portability and connectedness near impossible to achieve through any custom-built service.

The scourge of low expectations (the Ultranet post)

Disclaimer: I have many friends who have previously worked on the Ultranet and some continue to do so. Having said that, I have never had any vested interest in the Ultranet.

In all of the talk about the auditors report into the Ultranet, in the newspaper and on twitter, I haven’t seen any discussion about the first recommendation:

“develop a comprehensive and evidence‑based strategy or plan of action for use of learning technologies to underpin and guide the significant investment in ICT for government schools”

The disastrous $180 million Victorian school intranet could be scrapped at the end of the month prompting fears that months of student work and reports would be lost.

The End of the Ultranet Era

The End of the Ultranet Era | Ultranet | Scoop.it
This week sees the end of the government supported Ultranet (The Victorian Learning Management System)   and tonight I looked back at the blog post I wrote on the 6th of August 2011, just days befo...
Heather Bailie's insight:

Like Mel, I learned a great deal in the Ultranet era (including some that I question I ever needed to know), and just like her it connected me with many like-minded educators who continue to be an important part of my PLN.

When everything was working properly using Learning Tasks was ideal for my IT classes; if the reporting side had been available 12 months ago it would have been truly "Ultra".

Sadly there were too many out there who were never going to let go of August 9 as a reason not to participate, and then the AEU bans, as well-intentioned as they were, put the final nail in the coffin.

I have enjoyed sharing news about the Ultranet through this Scoop.it page but I suspect this may be its last post.
