A Reflection on Compass

A Reflection on Compass | Ultranet | Scoop.it
In a recent 2 Regular Teachers podcast, Rick Kaylor-Thomson and Adam Lavers looked back upon the Ultranet. With the current IBAC investigation into the whole affair, they touched on some of the good things to come out of the Ultranet, as well as some of the not so good aspects (including the exorbitant opening day.) It once again had me reflecting. Here then is a summary of what I see as the good, the bad and the disappointments relating to the Ultranet:

Ultranet gone…so what now for Victorian schools? | Signmee Blog

Information and communication technology is rapidly changing in design, development methods, accessibility, mobility; and with all this, the expectations of our end users and customers are being redefined. The grand and ambitious desires of pumping money into one development basket (e.g. $180M Vic School Ultranet), specifying requirements, putting out a tender and building a software solution is becoming a thing of the past for businesses and schools. The option to ‘adopt’ existing cloud services and solutions is ever appealing, as services continue to pop up providing flexibility, portability and connectedness near impossible to achieve through any custom-built service.

“develop a comprehensive and evidence‑based strategy or plan of action for use of learning technologies to underpin and guide the significant investment in ICT for government schools”
