Car dealers could be in line for further payouts on demonstrator VAT claims following last week's High Court ruling in favour of Littlewoods, the home shopping company.
Robert Killington's insight:

Although the taxpayer, Littlewoods, won their appeal there's so much at stake that I expect HMRC will appeal the decision to a higher court. This is set to rumble on for a while.

When will HMRC allow someone to Fastrack the Vat application process? - Director of Finance online

When will HMRC allow someone to Fastrack the Vat application process? - Director of Finance online | UK VAT | Scoop.it
When will HMRC allow someone to Fastrack the Vat application process?
Robert Killington's insight:

Would you like to pay for your VAT registration to be processed? I think the set up is rather different from that used for Passports where you obtain one when you want to travel overseas, whereas a VAT registration is a requirement when your taxable turnover goes over the limit imposed by law.

This is one change to which I will give no support.

VAT on e-books 'should go' - The Bookseller

VAT on e-books 'should go'
The Bookseller
UK booksellers have called for VAT on e-books to be scrapped in the week that the European Commission announced the creation of an expert group to explore taxation in the digital economy.
Robert Killington's insight:

Although I agree with the sentiment I doubt that this will happen in the near future. It would require a change in EU VAT legislation. And unless Luxembourg also made e-books zero-rated, Amazon would still be charging VAT at 3% on sales of e-books.

Stamps could cost £1 if newly privatised Royal Mail loses VAT-free status in ...
Mirror.co.uk
First-class stamps could soar to £1 if newly privatised Royal Mail loses a vital court case, the Sunday People reports.
Robert Killington's insight:

Seems to be a rather alarmist view of the situation. The Royal Mail is, as I understand it, the UK's universal service provider for post so it is difficult to understand how the exemption can be withdrawn. Even if Royal Mail had to charge VAT on stamps, the rise would be less than 20% because they'd be able to recover VAT on related expenses which would mitigate the amount of the increase. Still, why let reality get in the way of an attention seeking headline?
