Sexism entrenched in football: Sexist chanting at Chelsea’s Eva Carneiro

Sexism entrenched in football: Sexist chanting at Chelsea’s Eva Carneiro | UK sexism | Scoop.it

Abusive terrace songs aimed at women are generally ignored. When the incidents at Old Trafford and the Emirates Stadium were first reported, those who did so were told that there was no evidence or that they must have misheard.

MelissaCMac's insight:

This season, 25 match-day incidents of sexist abuse have been reported to anti-discrimination campaign group Kick It Out and equality group Women in Football (WiF).

LSE rugby 'slags' leaflets

LSE rugby 'slags' leaflets | UK sexism | Scoop.it

"They are so educated and yet so uneducated at the same time." (Michelle Warbis, Masters student at LSE)

MelissaCMac's insight:

The university was bombarded with complaints after leaflets urging players to “do your utmost to pull a sloppy bird” and containing a glossary of LSE rugby vocabulary that said that the term “gary”, means “to chat up a trollop, Eg ‘I’m putting in the ‘gary groundwork’ with this netball slag”, were handed out at the freshers’ fair on Friday.

The leaflets also stated that “homosexual debauchery” would not be tolerated, and said female sports players are “beast-like women who play sports just so they can come out with us on Wednesdays.”

The incident at the university, which is ranked 34th best in the world, shows how far we as a society still have to go. Ironically, the rugby club's apology further highlighted the societal problem - where misogynistic and homophobic slurs are considered humour, stating: "We have a lot to learn about the pernicious effects of ‘banter’".

'Casual sexism' of governors blamed for gender gap among top teachers

'Casual sexism' of governors blamed for gender gap among top teachers | UK sexism | Scoop.it

Gender bias among governors is preventing women from becoming secondary-school heads, Labour's education spokesman Tristram Hunt said yesterday.

MelissaCMac's insight:

Casual sexism is not innocuous.

An MP is finally acknowledging this publically, with Labour's education spokesman Tristram Hunt saying: "There is no place in our school system for this sort of casual everyday sexism that conforms to the views of 1980s conservatism."

In 2012, 64 per cent of heads were men and only 36 per cent were women.

Only 42% of British women describe themselves as feminists - why women should stand up for themselves

Only 42% of British women describe themselves as feminists - why women should stand up for themselves | UK sexism | Scoop.it
It is astounding how many females in the public eye reject the term ‘feminism’ today.
MelissaCMac's insight:

I'm not a feminist because the word is "quite extreme"

Beyoncé. Sarah Jessica Parker. Demi Moore. Madonna. These are all women who should know better.

What part of 'liberation for women' is not for you? The campaign for equal pay? The ability to walk the streets at night without worrying about rape? Yes we can vote, yes we can work, but we're certainly not equal.

Benevolent Sexism: Women deserve good manners — not slimy ‘chivalry’ | UK sexism | Scoop.it

Rosamund Urwin articulates why politeness and chivalry are two very different things. Research published by the Northeastern University in Boston backs this up, finding that “benevolent sexism” is a “driving force behind gender equality”, encouraging women to accept sexism by trivialising and normalising it.

BBC host makes 'Adam & Eve' remarks, suggesting rape can result from temptation

BBC host makes 'Adam & Eve' remarks, suggesting rape can result from temptation | UK sexism | Scoop.it

"BBC Radio Norfolk presenter Nick Conrad has said women should "keep their knickers on", during a live debate about convicted rapist Ched Evans.

Conrad told listeners "It's the old adage about if you yank a dog's tail then don't be surprised when it bites you."

He went on to say that "in their fury against men" feminists "neglect that very important part of the argument", that "there's a huge amount of energy in the male body."

MelissaCMac's insight:

Taking Conrad's comments to their full conclusion would suggest women should keep completely covered, lest even a form fitting office dress arouse mens insatiable attention.

Conrad's words are not only insulting to women who have experienced rape and to women as a whole, but also to men, implying that males have naturally uncontrollable sexual urges and as such are all of the same ilk as convicted rapists.

His remarks about feminists "fury against men" betray not only Conrad's ignorance of feminist movements, but his attempt at disguising support for sexual misconduct with populism.

And let's be clear, rape is a power issue, not a matter of sexual attraction.

Gender-specific books demean children

Gender-specific books demean children | UK sexism | Scoop.it

Sugar and spice and all things nice, that’s what little girls are made of. And boys? They’re made of trucks and trains and aeroplanes, building blocks, chemistry experiments, sword fights and guns, football, cricket, running and jumping, adventure and ideas, games and anything else they can think of.

MelissaCMac's insight:

The Independent on Sunday has made a positive stand against gender-marketed children's books, pledging to stop reviewing books explicitly aimed at just girls or boys.

Gender-specific books contribute to narrow views of male and female activities, characteristics and aspirations and it is good to see a debate finally raging around the issue

Gender inequality isn't just a female problem

Gender inequality isn't just a female problem | UK sexism | Scoop.it
At a recent London rap battle, a male rapper thought it would be a good idea to shoot the following words towards his female sparring partner: "After this, in the alley you're gonna get raped."
MelissaCMac's insight:

"To the men reading this, there are things you can do. Have the courage to speak up if your female colleague receives lesser pay for doing the same job, or when your friend throws out a sexist comment. It’s not about implying that women don’t have the capacity to stand up for themselves – it’s about stepping up and saying that this is not OK."
