Educational quality: how should we judge and communicate it?

Educational quality: how should we judge and communicate it? | UK Higher Education #UKHE | Scoop.it

Sponsored Q&A: what constitutes educational quality and are students informed enough? Graham Gibbs and other experts held an online discussion on Friday 18 January to debate the issues.

Ian Giles's insight:

For me we need to decide:

  1) What is the purpose of Higher Education?

  2) What do we mean by high quality?

Then standard quality processes can be used.

Should the sector, via QAA, define 1) and 2) or should this be left to each HEI.

The best place to learn teaching is on the job

The best place to learn teaching is on the job | UK Higher Education #UKHE | Scoop.it
“Anthony Seldon says the best way to improve teaching in universities is through tough appraisals based on student feedback (The best place to learn teaching is on the job | Opinion | Times Higher Education http://t.co/7kC9MNMbno)...”
Ian Giles's insight:
For me this is very insightful and chimes with my own experience through the years. It has always been interesting how HEIs appoint staff, and why so many people think that across the sector they are only interested in research. Some researchers make excellent teachers, but there are some terrible examples out there.

Harvard Business School’s teaching model offers consistency but also allows unscripted ‘discovery’
Ian Giles's insight:

SO the question is: How much autonomy do academics need in developing their material and does this vary between subjects and academic levels?

Dr Seroya Crouch's curator insight, March 1, 11:16 PM

Endeavour College of Natural Health uses a similar teaching model and teachers are encouraged to "flesh out" the material using their own cases and professional experience. We offer standardised accredited courses on six campuses across Australia and this method has worked well for us.

“A long summer break has allowed me to reflect on some issues which, although extremely important, I somehow seem to miss in the hubbub of events and financial news.”
Ian Giles's insight:
So this highlights the fact that perhaps we don't have the right balance of people with degrees, but it doesn't say much about vocational education to a higher level.
