The human facets of UX design

The human facets of UX design | UI Design | Scoop.it

"A visual designer approaches UX design from one point of view, the interaction designer from another, and the programmer from yet another. It can be helpful to understand and even experience the part of the elephant that others are experiencing."

HTTP Streaming: Load Balancing Tips

HTTP Streaming: Load Balancing Tips | UI Design | Scoop.it

In most cases, modern video content delivery systems are based on HTTP Streaming. This technology delivers video in a series of fragments (chunks), several seconds each. The most popular video delivery formats are Apple HTTP Live Streaming and Adobe HTTP Dynamic Streaming. In the near future, MPEG DASH will also probably become popular. The benefits offered by this type of delivery consist in a more stable video platform operation over a heterogeneous public network (Internet) and use of existing mechanisms of traditional CDN networks (HTTP chunk caching). But often traditional media is not sufficient, and large-scale online video services usually require a more flexible management of video content delivery. In our projects, we use our Video Load Balancer. In this post, we are going to outline the basics of its operation that might be helpful to your projects regardless of the load balancing technology you use.

Responsive Navigation Patterns

Responsive Navigation Patterns | UI Design | Scoop.it

It's very tricky to chooose a navigation pattern (menu) when it comes to mobile screen. And it's even more complicated when you've already got a "big screen" website. Brad Frost exposed in a neat article the pros and cons of different responsive navigation pattern stratagies. Not exhaustive but inspiring. What would you choose?

BBC reveals companion screen app strategy

BBC reveals companion screen app strategy | UI Design | Scoop.it

The BBC is going to use companion screen apps to enhance the enjoyment of programmes but also introduce audiences to what can often be a wealth of programme related information and interactivity online. The broadcaster will launch its first companion screen app this September in the form of a play-along game for Antiques Roadshow, a gentle Sunday night affair where the public bring family treasures for experts to analyse and value. The BBC is harnessing the fact that most viewers already try to second-guess the experts with their own valuations. You will be able to play the game whether you are watching live or on-demand.

Victoria Jaye, Head of IPTV & TV Online Content at the BBC, used Connected TV Summit last week to make the announcement but also outline the general companion app strategy for the broadcaster. She views show-related companion activities on smartphones, tablets and even the PC as a way to explore new creative opportunities. She made it clear that ownership of the app, in terms of the content and viewer experience, will belong to the production teams and that this is considered crucial. The production department will drive the format, while the technology development team will realise their vision.

Animation Principles in UI Design: Understanding Easing

Animation Principles in UI Design: Understanding Easing  | UI Design | Scoop.it

Well, this article is about easing, so that’s obviously the answer, but to understand what’s really going on here, we need to look deeper into the fundamentals of animation. We’ll take this step by step — we’ll learn the underlying concepts, explore ease-in and ease-out, break down easing curves and finally see how it all applies to UI Design.

With Super Hi-Vision, the TV landscape will look very different ten years from now

With Super Hi-Vision, the TV landscape will look very different ten years from now | UI Design | Scoop.it

No sooner are we getting to grips with 3D and HD, and we’re already being told about the “next big thing” in televisual technology. But keep your hat on, this next one is some years away yet.

Super Hi-Vision (or Ultra High Definition) has been getting a fair bit of coverage of late, largely due to the BBC’s partnership with Japanese broadcaster NHK for the 2012 Olympics.

The technology underlying Super Hi-Vision has been developed in large by NHK’s Science and Technology Research laboratories, which the BBC borrowed to showcase its potential as a broadcasting medium. While the BBC did a tentative test with the technology back in 2010, it was all really gearing up to the Olympics.

Super Hi-Vision combines images 16 times the resolution of High Definition television, with a 22.2 multichannel surround sound. As you’d maybe imagine, when viewed on a purpose-built big screen, the effect is phenomenal.

iPad video journalism comes of age at NAB 2012

iPad video journalism comes of age at NAB 2012 | UI Design | Scoop.it

Ever since I saw the 3rd-generation iPad (2012), I began to have visions of its use for video journalism. Many of ProVideo Coalition magazine readers sent me private enthusiastic comments about my pre-NAB iPad articles like Avid now lets you edit video on your iPad for US$4.99. Should you?, Why an iPad is like a 4×5 view camera, and why you’ll need a black “focusing cloth” and later part 1 of my review called 1st handheld dynamic microphones with hybrid XLR/USB/iPad connectivity from Audio Technica. While I was translating/localizing brochures for Avid Latin America just before NAB 2012, I became aware that they were going to launch iNews Command for iPad. On the NAB 2012 floor, I saw several iPad video journalists. Ahead you’ll find several photos, a few videos, and comments about various iPad video accessories.
