"In this Kappa Delta Pi Record article, Susan Trostle Brand (University of Rhode Island/Kingston), Antoinette Favazza (University of Rhode Island), and Elizabeth Dalton (TechACCESS) present ways that teachers can use Universal Design for Learning to make lessons accessible to students with a wide spectrum of learning styles and abilities:

> Multiple means of representation – Giving students options for perception, language and symbols, and comprehension"

> Multiple means for engagement – A constructivist approach can support active engagement through:

- Recruiting student interest

- Sustaining effort and persistence

- Self-regulation

> "Multiple means for action and expression – Varying physical action, expressive skills and fluency, and executive functions

> Multiple means of assessing understanding – This includes methods, formats, scope/range level, product and outcome, and feedback"

UDL Guides Personalizing Learning to Meet the Common Core

UDL Guides Personalizing Learning to Meet the Common Core | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is used to design curriculum, lessons and instruction based on the diversity of the learners in their classroom.

How can UDL guide personalize learning to meet the Common Core?

When a teacher understands his/her learners through the UDL lens, he/she creates a flexible learning environment and provides opportunities for learner voice and choice. When lessons are designed using the UDL model, the lesson includes goals, methods, materials, tools, and assessments to reach and support the maximum amount of learners in the classroom.

Learners can use this model to help them understand how they learn best and what learning path they can take to become an independent expert learner, leveraging their natural abilities in the process. This process helps the learner create their personal learning profile that is understood by both teacher and learner.

The importance of this strategy is that both the teacher and the learner understand who the learner is and how they learn best. The learner and the teacher uses the UDL lens to personalize learning. So what does that look like?

An example of an 8th Grade unit on the Civil War serves as an example along with two students who can meet a number of CCSS when they choose and use the tools to support their learning.

Explore our new website, Personalize Learning (www.personalizelearning.com), to learn more about the research, models and educators who are personalizing learning.

A Toolbox of Reading Comprehension Apps for the UDL Classroom

A Toolbox of Reading Comprehension Apps for the UDL Classroom | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it

English with Mr. Borman - A place to reflect and share.

Kathleen McClaskey's curator insight, April 27, 2:51 PM

Mr. Borman surveyed 17 students in one of his classes and discovered that there were a few needs when it came to reading comprehension. He has put together "A Toolbox of Reading Comprehension Apps" that can support the needs of his students in his UDL classroom.  For each app, he has outlined "What it does", "How students can use it" and the "UDL Principles".

Check out the Toolbox:

4 Ways to Incorporate UDL into Your Assignment Instructions

4 Ways to Incorporate UDL into Your Assignment Instructions | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it

"UDL asks the instructor to identify the key goal(s) and objectives of a course or an assignment and then provide multiple and flexible methods of presentation, expression, and engagement. This flexibility does not mean diminishing the intellectual rigor of the course or assignment.   Instead, it means recognizing that a learning goal can be accomplished through a host of means."

Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

George Washington University Assistant Professor, Robbin Zeff, offers four ways that UDL can be incorporated into instruction. Although this was written in 2005, these four advice still holds true. The four ways includes:

>> #1: Design instructions with the user in mind

>> #2: Reduce barriers to accessing the assignment

>> #3: Establish and articulate an assignment’s goals and objectives and criteria for assessment from the start

>> #4: Provide examples

Included are instructional strategies that can be easily integrated into the design of the assignment.

UDL Implementation: A Tale of Four Districts | National Center On UDL

UDL Implementation: A Tale of Four Districts | National Center On UDL | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it

UDL Implementation: A Tale of Four Districts is the story of four school districts taking the journey into the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) implementation process.

Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

Baltimore County Public Schools in Maryland, Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation in Indiana, Cecil County Public Schools in Maryland and Chelmsford Public Schools in Massachusetts participated in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded project to explore and pilot processes and tools developed to support UDL Implementation within their own unique districts. The story is told primarily through the voices of the dedicated educator leaders from these districts and the UDL facilitators who supported them. During the one-year grant, the districts worked with CAST, Inc. to develop and implement an effective and sustainable district plan to support the integration of Universal Design for Learning.

A UVM blog from the Center of Teaching and Learning.

"This post focuses on one of the three core principles in UDL: multiple means of representation.

This means moving beyond textual representation by presenting information and conceptual knowledge to students in a variety of formats, e.g., images, video, and audio. Not only does research indicate that this practice can enhance student understanding and retention of course content, it can also be used to engage students and prime discussion. Students responding to an image, song or movie clip can spark reflection and debate."

Moving Up with UDL in Higher Ed

Moving Up with UDL in Higher Ed | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it
Moving Up….UDL in Higher Education I’ve talked about how UDL can be used in the public school setting; the value of UDL, the how of UDL, the things to consider when making systemic changes to implement UDL, and a variety of methods of using UDL. But, as I’ve learned this week (and suspected all along), UDL can be used at the Higher Education level as well!
Kathleen McClaskey's insight:

The author provides some advice on how UDL can be implemented in higher ed and then provides examples of where UDL is in colleges along with a set of resources these colleges us to implement UDL.

"To implement UDL at the college levels, perhaps it should be incorporated into the college mission, purpose, strategic plan.  To be effective, obviously resources and trainings must be provided to professors."

Here is some of the author's final thoughts on the advantages of implementing UDL principles at all levels of education.

"However, as more and more institutions of higher education begin to implement UDL framework principles, students will be better prepared for their futures as they learn how to learn and how to engage in their own learning process.  It makes sense that K-12 school systems and institutions of higher education move towards implementing UDL together."

"As the CCSS has been crafted with principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to support inclusive access for all students with identified learning needs and/or disabilities, English Learners, linguistic minority students, as well as students from fragile families, many educators respond with concern that without technological resources, they feel challenged to design instruction to meet the diverse needs of their students. Michelle Meyer presents some excellent UDL strategies that can support the ELL Student. She describes a learner who has limited English proficiency and offers options to support that learner using the 3 UDL Principles with reference to specific UDL Guidelines and Checkpoints.

According to The Knowledge Loom, English language learners refer to students who have a first (home, primary or native) language other than English and are in the process of learning English. The article  states there are at least three factors that can affect the amount of time it takes for a student to attain cognitive and academic sufficiency in English:

> Age

> Immersion in English

> Similarity to English

Lisa Bischoff Wittek's comment, January 25, 7:51 AM
It is also important to remember that some children have interrupted or minimal/no formal education. These students, often referred to as "SIFEs" - Students with Interrupted Formal Education - may not be able to read or write in their native language. While age, immersion, and similarity to English are important, it is not that "simple."
