Curricular Opportunities in the Digital Age | Students at the Center

Curricular Opportunities in the Digital Age | Students at the Center | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

This paper explores how new digital technologies can be used to design curricula that are flexible enough to adapt readily to individual differences. The authors propose that universal design for learning—as the confluence of advances in the neuroscience of human variability and in multimedia technologies—can create an “ecology for learning” which provides rich, diverse, student-centered learning pathways for all students.

Writing Apps – Supports for Students with LD

Writing Apps – Supports for Students with LD  | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

Writing is considered one of the most difficult literacy tasks. Many students with learning disabilities struggle with the process of writing as well as the mechanical componets of the writing task. Technology can provide support to the mechanical demands of the writing process and is often a welcome tool to students. When asked about AT supports for writing there are many, however some of the standard AT tools of mechanical writing are voice recognition, use of text to speech, word prediction and adaptive or customized writing environments. Although there are others (especially those with text to speech) here are some apps that show good reviews and provide basic features of the standard AT tools for writing. At the present, phonetic word prediction does not appear to be present in writing apps (may be found in more advanced text-based AAC apps such as Predictably).

Stages of Learning – Knowing your Learners » Universally Designed

Stages of Learning – Knowing your Learners » Universally Designed | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

Jason Gibson makes some important points about how to meet the need of ALL learners.  First and foremost, know your learners before you decide on an instructional  strategy and the technology you may use.  How do you do this?  Use the UDL Class Learning Profile.

"I wanted to share a foundational principle for meeting the needs of ALL learners. Before you select the technology, you must identify the strategy. Before you select the strategy, you have to know where your learners are in regards to the content/skill you are teaching! Knowing this will allow you to make the best instructional (including when, what, and how with technology) decision for each learner. Haring, et al., 1978 was one of the earliest to dive into these stages and it has moved forward with a few minor changes through the years. Here they are (drumroll please!): Acquisition, Fluency, Maintenance, and Generalization."

Educating for the Unknown: Universal Design for Learning and the Arts

Educating for the Unknown: Universal Design for Learning and the Arts | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

Dr. Magee offers a thoughtful insight on UDL and the arts and how we could harness technology and the arts to help solve the dropout epidemic in the US.  "Universal Design for Learning offers foundational tenets for truly egalitarian education where no one is marginalized by being labeled as having “special needs or exceptional needs” rather, UDL widens the circle so that every learner is considered unique and has a full compliment of accommodations offered to them to support a holistic educational experience. Accommodations become invisible, embedded in the classroom and integrated into the way we teach and learn."

CEC Member Brings UDL to the Senate!

George Van Horn, Special Education Director at the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC) in Colombus, Indiana and current Indiana CEC President implemented a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework across his district.  This month he was able to share his successes in a Senate hearing titled "The Promise of Accessible Technology: Challenges and Opportunities". The Superintendent of BCSC, Dr. John Quick explained that UDL is a set of principles for curriculum development that give all individuals equal opportunities to learn. Dr. Quick described how his district worked for years to implement UDL and how it incorporated technology into its student’s lives.  "Moreover, he emphasized the point that although UDL specifically benefits students with disabilities, it benefits all students in the district and is used to help everyone better access knowledge and demonstrate learning growth. Training for professionals working in the schools is essential and in BCBS all teachers undergo a three day UDL workshop at the beginning of the year to ensure they can fully integrate UDL throughout their practice."
