UDL Guides Personalizing Learning to Meet the Common Core

UDL Guides Personalizing Learning to Meet the Common Core | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is used to design curriculum, lessons and instruction based on the diversity of the learners in their classroom.

How can UDL guide personalize learning to meet the Common Core?

When a teacher understands his/her learners through the UDL lens, he/she creates a flexible learning environment and provides opportunities for learner voice and choice. When lessons are designed using the UDL model, the lesson includes goals, methods, materials, tools, and assessments to reach and support the maximum amount of learners in the classroom. Learners can use this model to help them understand how they learn best and what learning path they can take to become an independent expert learner, leveraging their natural abilities in the process. This process helps the learner create their personal learning profile that is understood by both teacher and learner.

The importance of this strategy is that both the teacher and the learner understand who the learner is and how they learn best. The learner and the teacher uses the UDL lens to personalize learning. So what does that look like? An example of an 8th Grade unit on the Civil War serves as an example along with two students who can meet a number of CCSS when they choose and use the tools to support their learning. Explore our new website, Personalize Learning (www.personalizelearning.com), to learn more about the research, models and educators who are personalizing learning.

Writing Apps – Supports for Students with LD

Writing Apps – Supports for Students with LD  | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

Writing is considered one of the most difficult literacy tasks. Many students with learning disabilities struggle with the process of writing as well as the mechanical componets of the writing task. Technology can provide support to the mechanical demands of the writing process and is often a welcome tool to students. When asked about AT supports for writing there are many, however some of the standard AT tools of mechanical writing are voice recognition, use of text to speech, word prediction and adaptive or customized writing environments. Although there are others (especially those with text to speech) here are some apps that show good reviews and provide basic features of the standard AT tools for writing. At the present, phonetic word prediction does not appear to be present in writing apps (may be found in more advanced text-based AAC apps such as Predictably).

A Teacher's Guide to Fixing No Child Left Behind

Test obsession, narrow curricula, blaming teachers--a few problems resulting from the No Child Left Behind law that are unpacked in this animated video. The video details some of the problems created by NCLB and describes President Barack Obama's proposal to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and solve them. Written by a teacher at the U.S. Department of Education, the animated video offers a vision that strengthens teaching, narrows achievement gaps, raises standards, and prepares all students for colleges and careers in a global economy. It includes video clips of Barack Obama and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

Integrating Differentiated Instruction & Understanding by Design

Integrating Differentiated Instruction & Understanding by Design | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

Teachers struggle every day to bring quality instruction to their students. Educators need a model that acknowledges the centrality of standards but also ensures that students truly understand content and can apply it in meaningful ways. For many educators, Understanding by Design addresses that need. Simultaneously, teachers find it increasingly difficult to ignore the diversity of the learners who populate their classrooms. For many educators, Differentiated Instruction offers a framework for addressing learner variance as a critical component of instructional planning. In this book the two models converge, providing readers fresh perspectives on two of the greatest contemporary challenges for educators: crafting powerful curriculum in a standards-dominated era and ensuring academic success for the full spectrum of learners.

Universal Design for Learning in Postsecondary Institutions

Universal Design for Learning in Postsecondary Institutions | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

Most people associate the term Universal Design for Learning (UDL) with providing accessible curriculum instruction for students with disabilities in the K-12 school setting. The benefits of applying UDL principles in postsecondary settings are often overlooked and although UDL does not, it is often seen as somehow lowering standards. Conversely universally designing postsecondary classes could ultimately be more valuable to students because of the changes students experience in accommodation provision when they transition to postsecondary settings.
