Video: Stephen Heppell - Child Led Learning

"We need to trust our children to be good learners, we need to trust ourselves to be professionals, and we need to trust our systems to get out of the way." Drawing upon real world examples and programmes Stephen Heppell (heppell.net) discusses the impact of exponential technological change on learning calling for a greater involvement and participation in the design of learning and learning environments by the learners themselves. "We are not going to build better learning for our children; we are going to build it with our children". Presented at the Learning Without Frontiers Conference, London, January 26th, 2012.

Google Earth: Over 1 Billion Downloads and So Many Uses in the Classroom | edte.ch | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

"Google Earth was one of the very first pieces of software that I began to create educational resources with. As I put it in one of my first ever blog posts 5 years ago: ”This app won me over straight away.” The engaging environment really struck a chord with me and I remember fondly my first forays into using it to support learning. It has developed so much over the years...."

2020 Forecast: Creating the Future of Learning

2020 Forecast: Creating the Future of Learning | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

If you think our future will require better schools, you're wrong. The future of education calls for entirely new kinds of learning environments. If you think we will need better teachers, you're wrong. Tomorrow’s learners will need guides who take on fundamentally different roles. As every dimension of our world evolves so rapidly, the education challenges of tomorrow will require solutions that go far beyond today's answers.

An alternative to retro-fitting learning environments | The CORE Education Blog

Making learning spaces and resources work for users is an ongoing challenge. Everyone has different needs and learning styles, and there is definitely no one-size-fits-all.
But one thing we can do, is raise the bar, so that from the outset, our ways of working and the presentation of our resources is the best that it can be.

Writing Apps – Supports for Students with LD

Writing Apps – Supports for Students with LD  | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

Writing is considered one of the most difficult literacy tasks. Many students with learning disabilities struggle with the process of writing as well as the mechanical componets of the writing task. Technology can provide support to the mechanical demands of the writing process and is often a welcome tool to students. When asked about AT supports for writing there are many, however some of the standard AT tools of mechanical writing are voice recognition, use of text to speech, word prediction and adaptive or customized writing environments. Although there are others (especially those with text to speech) here are some apps that show good reviews and provide basic features of the standard AT tools for writing. At the present, phonetic word prediction does not appear to be present in writing apps (may be found in more advanced text-based AAC apps such as Predictably).

Preparing and Supporting Teachers for 21st Century Expectations through Universal Design for Learning

Integration of 21st century goals into teacher education programs requires attention to diversity, technology, and instructional supports in terms of how content material is presented, students are engaged, and learning is documented. Faced with barriers such as disparities in access to curriculum and technology, as well as differences in background experiences and prior knowledge, teachers in today's classrooms face unique challenges as they struggle to meet the diversity of needs within a single classroom setting. As a result, educators need innovative approaches to address the diversity of available resources, student characteristics, and other environmental challenges. One approach is the integration of Universal Design for Learning principles with instructional planning.
