SPACE | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

As a teacher/lecturer or director in the performing arts, imagine your students being able to access your usual performance space ‘virtually’ at any time, putting your students into any seat of the audience and having them view a set from that perspective or being able to create a lighting plot without worrying about the health and safety implications…As a student of performing arts, imagine being able to design your own 3D set; explore sets from the audience’s perspective (or from the very seat that your examiner will be occupying when you perform!) or being able to experiment with lighting effects on stage…SPACE is a 3D teaching and learning resource, particularly aimed at supporting performing arts lecturers/teachers and students in both Higher and Further Education.SPACE stands for Simulated Performing Arts Creative Environment and is jointly supported by JISC and the HEA under the Open Educational Resources Programme.

National Center on UDL launches UDL Series

On November 17, 2011, the National Center on UDL (www.udlcenter.org) will introduce a new professional learning resource, the UDL Series. We invite you to join us and ask you to share this announcement with others. The UDL Series is a free online collection of rich media presentations (typically 15-20 minutes in length) that help educators to build UDL understanding, implementation skills, and leadership ability. The first session, entitled “Learner Variability and UDL,” features Drs. David Rose and Todd Rose discussing how UDL addresses systematic learner variability. It also includes real examples of how two educators apply the principles of UDL to meet varied learner needs. Once launched, the UDL Series will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at www.udlseries.udlcenter.org.

Principles of universal design for learning: What is the value of UDL training on accessible pedagogy?

With the increase in online courses and the associated rise in the number of disabled students enrolling, there are specific expectations for faculty members to prepare courses to be accessible. This study, using feedback from a sample of seven community college faculty members, explored the value of training in universal design for learning (UDL) on the design of accessible online courses, using a pre-experimental, cross-sectional, mixed methods design. Findings from the study indicated a statistically significant increase, pre test to posttest, in overall knowledge of the principles of UDL as well as a statistically significant increase, pretest to posttest, in importance placed on the design of accessible courses. These findings were supported by the embedded qualitative data which included concrete examples of how the use of UDL principles and design strategies was stronger in the posttest results. The outcomes of this study indicated that providing training for faculty members about the principles of universal design for learning (UDL) is important in terms of the effective design of accessible online courses. The results also highlighted the value of UDL training with the necessity for educational institutions to comply with disability related laws and the continued growth in the number of disabled students enrolling in the online courses. As this growth continues, the need to design online courses that are accessible will becomes more critical to the field of instructional design. Findings from this study indicated that this need can be effectively addressed by making UDL training an integral part of professional development for community college (an possibly other) faculty members who design their own courses.

Organize courses, research groups and conferences – for free. The university has c. hanged little since the days of Gutenberg. Students, however, have! The Internet has become an integral part of our lives. Today, we share ideas online. We socialise online. We learn online. Everyday, everywhere – except in the classroom. There, the laws of Gutenberg's Galaxy still prevail. Our universities are still working with "blackboards". It is time for a digital revolution on campus.

Universal Design for Learning and Online Education

Course management systems can provide the opportunity for students with physical and sensory (deaf and blind) disabilities to enroll and excel in online programs. However, if technology and course management systems do not meet accessibility guidelines, institutions are potentially preventing 1 in 5 prospective and current students from being able to succeed in courses and programs. This session highlights proactive strategies for utilizing Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to address and overcome barriers to learning. Expert instructors will also share current and emerging practices being utilized at Drexel University and other institutions.
