WebAIM: Blog - Infographic: Web Accessibility for Designers | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

The focus of web accessibility is often on web development – the things that happen in HTML, CSS, or JavaScript after a site has been designed visually. Optimal accessibility should start much earlier, as part of the visual design process. We have created an infographic that highlights a few important principles of accessible design. Focus Area: Learning | Change People’s Lives Conference | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

The 20th century solution of ‘special’ products for ‘special’ learners is giving way to the realization that difference in needs and preferences is universal and needs to be mainstreamed. As technology for learning becomes ubiquitous, it’s time to recognize that every tool for learning needs to anticipate the broadest possible range of learners and build in the flexibility to make the ordinary extraordinary. Among the beneficiaries of thinking differently about tools for learning will be the lifelong learners for whom learning will be a constant as long as they live

The challenge of inclusive higher education in the 21st century | Temple University

The scholarship of teaching and learning at the postsecondary level has enabled a consensus that the conventional methods of college teaching -- characterized at their simplest by full-session lectures, assigned readings and exercises from a textbook, and grading based primarily on two or three exams – simply do not work for a sizable number of students. Moreover, they often do a poor job of fostering some of the more sophisticated types of thinking and skills that our society expects of college graduates. To do justice to the many dimensions of diversity found among Temple students, especially, requires us to attend to two complementary realities: First, creating a learning environment that will be responsive to the interests, abilities, backgrounds, and needs of all students is a daunting challenge; and second, the presence of so many differences among the students in any given classroom creates rich opportunities not only for subject-matter learning, but for meaningful cognitive, social, and moral development as well.

Why UDL is Necessary for Education Technology

Why UDL is Necessary for Education Technology | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

We live in a society that espouses equality for all. It is, in fact, the central tenet of American philosophy. However, consider the difficulty providing guidelines to encourage a uniform approach to education that ensures equal opportunities for each student. It sounds like an impossible task given the diversity of students and wide range of curricular goals. Adding into the mix the fact that digital technology is taking more and more schools online only emphasizes the challenge of individualizing education for each student.

How the Human Brain Retains Information - Infographic

How the Human Brain Retains Information - Infographic | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

The human brain consists of about one billion neurons. Each neuron forms about 1,000 connections to other neurons, amounting to more than a trillian connections. This amounts to quite a large storage capacity. At Mindflash they examine how the brain retains all this information and displays it visually – after all, visuals are the easiest media to retain for most.

Preparing and Supporting Teachers for 21st Century Expectations through Universal Design for Learning

Integration of 21st century goals into teacher education programs requires attention to diversity, technology, and instructional supports in terms of how content material is presented, students are engaged, and learning is documented. Faced with barriers such as disparities in access to curriculum and technology, as well as differences in background experiences and prior knowledge, teachers in today's classrooms face unique challenges as they struggle to meet the diversity of needs within a single classroom setting. As a result, educators need innovative approaches to address the diversity of available resources, student characteristics, and other environmental challenges. One approach is the integration of Universal Design for Learning principles with instructional planning.

An alternative to retro-fitting learning environments | The CORE Education Blog

Making learning spaces and resources work for users is an ongoing challenge. Everyone has different needs and learning styles, and there is definitely no one-size-fits-all.
