Writing Apps – Supports for Students with LD

Writing Apps – Supports for Students with LD  | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

Writing is considered one of the most difficult literacy tasks. Many students with learning disabilities struggle with the process of writing as well as the mechanical componets of the writing task. Technology can provide support to the mechanical demands of the writing process and is often a welcome tool to students. When asked about AT supports for writing there are many, however some of the standard AT tools of mechanical writing are voice recognition, use of text to speech, word prediction and adaptive or customized writing environments. Although there are others (especially those with text to speech) here are some apps that show good reviews and provide basic features of the standard AT tools for writing. At the present, phonetic word prediction does not appear to be present in writing apps (may be found in more advanced text-based AAC apps such as Predictably).

QR voice

QR voice | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

Text-to-speech lets you automatically have a voice read pieces of text, and sharing the converted speech means you do not have to read out the text yourself. Normally to share the converted speech you have to electronically send somebody the speech file. But using a service called QR Voice, you can conveniently and quickly send anybody a speech file that has been converted from text, as a QR code. QR Voice provides an interesting angle on the regular QR codes that have been doing the rounds recently. QR voice encodes a given text message into QR code that once scanned by a QR scanner smartphone application reproduces the message with a synthesized voice.

The article, written by David Rose and Ge Vue in 2010, imagines the future by “pre-creating” the Presidential Address at the IDA Annual Conference in 2020. This article was first published in the International Dyslexia Association, Perspectives on Language and Literacy, Winter 2010. One notable difference between the printed text version and this digital version is the UDL learning supports embedded throughout. To see descriptions of the UDL features and how they support learning, click on "Show UDL Information" located in the upper right hand corner of the page.
