UDL in the Classroom - Reaching All Students with Technology - Classroom 2.0

UDL in the Classroom - Reaching All Students with Technology - Classroom 2.0 | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

Lisa Parisi will be presenting on UDL in the Classroom at the 2012 Social Learning Summit.  Here is a description of the presentation that will be filled with great strategies in using social media in a UDL classroom.

Session Description: We, as educators, are faced with many different challenges. We have a large amount of curriculum to cover, tests our students must do well on, and a public who believes one size fits all works in the classroom. Our students are getting burned out quickly. And one size fits all does not take into account the learning disabled child, the ADHD child, the hearing impaired child, the bored child, the struggling reader, the math phobic child, the artistic child, the leader, the follower, or any other "out of the norm" student (whatever that might be). Web 2.0 tools afford us the opportunity to help all students meet the curricular requirements, demonstrate knowledge, learn, and enjoy school. Learn how to use collaborative tools such as Google docs, presentation tools like Glogster, and research tools such as Discovery Streaming to enliven your classroom. Today, there is no excuse for not reaching all children. Come hear how easy it is."

CEC Member Brings UDL to the Senate!

George Van Horn, Special Education Director at the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC) in Colombus, Indiana and current Indiana CEC President implemented a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework across his district.  This month he was able to share his successes in a Senate hearing titled "The Promise of Accessible Technology: Challenges and Opportunities". The Superintendent of BCSC, Dr. John Quick explained that UDL is a set of principles for curriculum development that give all individuals equal opportunities to learn. Dr. Quick described how his district worked for years to implement UDL and how it incorporated technology into its student’s lives.  "Moreover, he emphasized the point that although UDL specifically benefits students with disabilities, it benefits all students in the district and is used to help everyone better access knowledge and demonstrate learning growth. Training for professionals working in the schools is essential and in BCBS all teachers undergo a three day UDL workshop at the beginning of the year to ensure they can fully integrate UDL throughout their practice."

The Pros And Cons Of Social Media In Education [INFOGRAPHIC]

The Pros And Cons Of Social Media In Education [INFOGRAPHIC] | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

In less than a decade, social media has had a tremendous impact on the world around us. Businesses of all sizes can leverage platforms such as Twitter and Facebook to build large, engaged communities, raise awareness and drive footfall. Equally, social media empowers consumers to make smarter decisions, engage with brands and demand better customer service. Social media is also playing a significant role in the education system, with many schools and universities eager to adopt the use of these tools in the classroom. Managed correctly, these channels can be a great boon for students. But poor understanding of the medium can result in a low level of maintenance and interaction, which can be detrimental to student satisfaction and engagement rates.

From Differentiated Instruction to Differentiated Assessment

From Differentiated Instruction to Differentiated Assessment | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

For all the ink that has been spilled regarding the issue of differentiated instruction, little has been said about differentiated assessment. There is no doubt that students come to school with a variety of backgrounds and learning needs, and Carol Ann Tomlinson (Tomlinson & McTighe, 2006) and others (e.g., Stefanakis & Meier, 2010; Fogarty & Pete, 2010) have documented the importance of the issue and the potential success of the results. The devil, as always, is in the details, and as Schmoker (2010) recently noted, some teachers find the demands of creating different lessons for the learning needs of each student overwhelming. Here are some practical ideas for busy teachers who want to meet the different needs of students while managing the demands on their already busy schedules
