From Differentiated Instruction to Differentiated Assessment

From Differentiated Instruction to Differentiated Assessment | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

For all the ink that has been spilled regarding the issue of differentiated instruction, little has been said about differentiated assessment. There is no doubt that students come to school with a variety of backgrounds and learning needs, and Carol Ann Tomlinson (Tomlinson & McTighe, 2006) and others (e.g., Stefanakis & Meier, 2010; Fogarty & Pete, 2010) have documented the importance of the issue and the potential success of the results. The devil, as always, is in the details, and as Schmoker (2010) recently noted, some teachers find the demands of creating different lessons for the learning needs of each student overwhelming. Here are some practical ideas for busy teachers who want to meet the different needs of students while managing the demands on their already busy schedules

Universal Design for Learning: It Just Fits

Universal Design for Learning: It Just Fits | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

Are you familiar with the generic hospital socks with the little raised bumps on the bottoms so you don’t slip and fall on their slick floors? Well, if you’ve ever actually worn these socks and your feet are not 27 inches long, they’re not the right size. So, rather than preventing a problem, they simply exacerbate the potential for falling by giving us all socks to wear that don’t fit. This is what’s happening in public education all too often. When we think we’re trying to prevent issues from arising, we are actually making them worse by using the wrong type of lessons with the wrong types of students.

Museum Box

Museum Box | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

This site provides the tools for you to build up an argument or description of an event, person or historical period by placing items in a virtual box. What items, for example, would you put in a box to describe your life; the life of a Victorian Servant or Roman soldier; or to show that slavery was wrong and unnecessary? You can display anything from a text file to a movie. You can also view and comment on the museum boxes submitted by others.
