CEC Member Brings UDL to the Senate!

George Van Horn, Special Education Director at the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC) in Colombus, Indiana and current Indiana CEC President implemented a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework across his district.  This month he was able to share his successes in a Senate hearing titled "The Promise of Accessible Technology: Challenges and Opportunities". The Superintendent of BCSC, Dr. John Quick explained that UDL is a set of principles for curriculum development that give all individuals equal opportunities to learn. Dr. Quick described how his district worked for years to implement UDL and how it incorporated technology into its student’s lives.  "Moreover, he emphasized the point that although UDL specifically benefits students with disabilities, it benefits all students in the district and is used to help everyone better access knowledge and demonstrate learning growth. Training for professionals working in the schools is essential and in BCBS all teachers undergo a three day UDL workshop at the beginning of the year to ensure they can fully integrate UDL throughout their practice."

Universal Design for Learning in Postsecondary Institutions

Universal Design for Learning in Postsecondary Institutions | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

Most people associate the term Universal Design for Learning (UDL) with providing accessible curriculum instruction for students with disabilities in the K-12 school setting. The benefits of applying UDL principles in postsecondary settings are often overlooked and although UDL does not, it is often seen as somehow lowering standards. Conversely universally designing postsecondary classes could ultimately be more valuable to students because of the changes students experience in accommodation provision when they transition to postsecondary settings.

Equal Access in General Curriculum

Equal Access in General Curriculum | UDL & ICT in education | Scoop.it

Once we understand that our students with learning difficulties incite better instructional design for all students, we begin to see that the curriculum itself also needs to be re-evaluated - It cannot continue to be a "one size fits most" approach (Rose, Meyer, Hitchcock, 2005).

A Comprehensive Approach to RTI: Embedding Universal Design for Learning and Technology

Response to intervention (Rtl) provides tiered levels of supports to all students and allows for increasingly more inten- sive and individualized instruction. Similarly, universal design for learning (UDL) addresses needs of students by proactively plan- ning for instructional, environmental, and technology supports to allow all students to effectively access and engage in instruction. Although these two frameworks are widely accepted as structures for supporting students with diverse learning needs, the relation- ship between them has not been adequately developed. This arti- cle describes how an ecological Rtl framework that integrates scientifically based instructional strategies, proactive instruc- tional design, and purposeful technology use can provide a more seamless support system for all students.

Principles of universal design for learning: What is the value of UDL training on accessible pedagogy?

With the increase in online courses and the associated rise in the number of disabled students enrolling, there are specific expectations for faculty members to prepare courses to be accessible. This study, using feedback from a sample of seven community college faculty members, explored the value of training in universal design for learning (UDL) on the design of accessible online courses, using a pre-experimental, cross-sectional, mixed methods design. Findings from the study indicated a statistically significant increase, pre test to posttest, in overall knowledge of the principles of UDL as well as a statistically significant increase, pretest to posttest, in importance placed on the design of accessible courses. These findings were supported by the embedded qualitative data which included concrete examples of how the use of UDL principles and design strategies was stronger in the posttest results. The outcomes of this study indicated that providing training for faculty members about the principles of universal design for learning (UDL) is important in terms of the effective design of accessible online courses. The results also highlighted the value of UDL training with the necessity for educational institutions to comply with disability related laws and the continued growth in the number of disabled students enrolling in the online courses. As this growth continues, the need to design online courses that are accessible will becomes more critical to the field of instructional design. Findings from this study indicated that this need can be effectively addressed by making UDL training an integral part of professional development for community college (an possibly other) faculty members who design their own courses.
