iPads in Education: Critiquing the Positive Spin Memes

iPads in Education: Critiquing the Positive Spin Memes | Ubiquitous Learning | Scoop.it

We have to problematize the notion of being able to immediately access huge volumes of information up against the notion of learning and integrating that information into one’s schemata. How is accessing large amounts of information related to learning it, especially learning it well enough to apply it? What is more, if learners spend so much time accessing information or organizing it for future access, do they spend proportionally more time managing information than learning it?

'It's just their world': iPads changing Basehor-Linwood sixth-grade classrooms

'It's just their world': iPads changing Basehor-Linwood sixth-grade classrooms | Ubiquitous Learning | Scoop.it

After providing a few minutes to finish up homework, Juli Brown has some instructions for her students.

“Here’s what I need you to have out on your desk: your literature book and your iPad,” Brown says.

The Basehor-Linwood school district spent $126,000 to put an Apple iPad in the hands of every Basehor-Linwood Middle School sixth-grader this year, and on Monday those iPads were the only tool students needed in Brown’s reading class. No notebooks, pencils or highlighters were necessary.

Location Literacy & Foursquare in the Classroom

In 2012 mobile web access will eclipse desktop access. This means a lot more than shrinking the web so it fits on a mobile screen. The mobile web is not just a smaller desktop web. In the mobile web context is key. It is the central component that differentiates the mobile experience from the desktop one (what I like to call, semi-jokingly, the Late Desktop Era). And location / place is a critical contextual layer.

What We Learned: A 1:1 iPad Reflection

What We Learned: A 1:1 iPad Reflection | Ubiquitous Learning | Scoop.it

The reason for moving away from textbooks is that they offer a myopic vision of a world that is ever-changing. Simply viewing a textbook on an iPad does not change or innovate learning, nor does it use the iPad to its full potential. If your plan is to digitize a standard textbook, save your money and renew your textbook licenses.
