Gov. Cuomo Calls for Reform: Marijuana Arrests That 'Stigmatize and Criminalize... Must End Now'

Gov. Cuomo Calls for Reform: Marijuana Arrests That 'Stigmatize and Criminalize... Must End Now' | U.S.-Mexico border | Scoop.it
Possession of marijuana is the leading arrest in New York City today -- but it's not supposed to be this way. In 1977, New York State removed criminal penalties for private possession of marijuana, and made possession in public view a misdemeanor.
Billie Greenwood's insight:

NY-based story has relevance to border issues. Big banks get off with slap on wrist for money laundering, but possession of marijuana often garners jail time.

Carlos Batara's curator insight, January 7, 2013 9:59 AM

Despite widespread optimisim regarding immigration reform taking place this year, as Billie Greewood points out, immigration reform will not happen easily.

She highlights the movement on immigration reform in the Senate and House.  Even this early, short list of political players and actions indicates the political complexity and obstacles soon to unfold:

(a) House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi stated immigration reform was a priority issue in her opening remarks on the first day of the 113th congressional session.  House Speaker John Boehner avoided any mention of immigration reform in his opening speech.

(b) A bipartisan group, informally known as the “Gang of Eight,” has already begun the effort to hammer out a proposal.  The involvement of Senators Chuck Shumer (D-NY), Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Bob Menedez (D-NJ), John McCain (R-Ariz.), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Jedd Flake (R-Ariz.).  Yet, an alternative approach is being taken by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Rep.Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), who are drafting a series of smaller immigration bills.

(c) Perhaps the strongest voice for immigration reform in Congress, Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez (D-Ill.) relinquished over 20 years of seniority on the House Financial Services Committee.  He decided to pour his energies on the House Judiciary Committer, to help push immigration reform “over the finish line.”

As an immigrant rights advocate, political compromises may lead to less than what I would term "comprehensive" immigration reform.  The more significant question is whether the less desirable aspects of compromises hammered out will be acceptable as temporary solutions.

In other words, will the future cures will be worse than the contemporary pains?

Billie Greenwood's comment, January 12, 2013 9:30 PM
Thanks, Carlos Batara, for your observations. It will be an uphill battle, even if an opening exists that has not been present before.

Securing the Mexican border or Securing America’s future?

Carlos Batara's curator insight, January 12, 2013 11:09 PM

As usual, Billie Greenwood is right on point in this recent post.  She asserts, in summary, that after all the efforts to secure the Mexico-U.S. border, enough progress has been made that it's time for the rest of the immigration reform agenda to move forward.

Hard core opponents of immigration reform, however, are unlikely to quit posing any border security problems as a red herring to distract and mislead the American public.  Their agenda, of course, is not a fix to our immigration woes.  Their sole pupose is to completely seal the border.

If they would stop and "think," just for a moment, they would realize the utter foolishness of their central position.  America is not - and never has been - an island.  As a country that has strived for global supremacy, it's quite natural for folks from other far-away places, from poverty-stricken regions, to want to call the United States home.

So let's just get immigration reform underway.

As an immigration lawyer who handles immigrant VAWA matters, I know this bonehead group of politicians has opened the doors for increased cruelty towards immigrants, especially immigrant women and children. .

Sad, sad, sad.
