Eric, as always, you post some very interesting articles. This week Nordic Tyres UK Ltd is working with Dumfries and Galloway Road Safety Partnership, assisting the police with their "Ready for Winter" campaign. Obviously we are promoting the Nokian winter tyres which are ideally suited for cold weather temperatures. I have to say that overall we are very impressed with the level of response we are receiving from the general public. You will always get the odd idiot that throw accusations about motorissts being persecuted by the police. They just don't get the picture that we are trying to save lives!

Winter tyres – or 'cold weather tyres' as they are technically known – have become increasingly in demand over the last few winters, following icy conditions that brought many a vehicle to a standstill.
Nordic Tyres's insight:
Why wait until the snow is here? Winter Tyres (Cold Weather Tyres) should be a consideration as soon as the temperature drops in order to ensure the safest driving conditions.
But I would like to add that our recommendations for fitment of winter tyres is actually September.
Not only do the Nokian tyres give outstanding performance in snow and slush - they are at their best when driving in temperature of +7degrees or below. In cold/wet weather the Nokian winter tyres will stop 8 meters shorter than that of a summer tyre. So this is why we always try to get the message out that September to April are the key months for fitment of these cold weather / winter tyres. This ensures that the motorists are safer when the temperature suddenly drops.
It doesn't have to be extreme conditions to benefit with winter tyres.
Would also like to highlight that Nokian ranked 1st place in the Auto Express Winter Tyre Test this year.

Nordic Tyres's insight:
This report intimates how much the cost is for employers, but it should also state that the cost is not always a burden on the employer. Companies do not have to offer pay if an employee can't get into work in the event of bad weather, so more often than not it is the employee that either looses pay or holiday entitlement. On that note however, I know that if I had not had winter tyres fitted to my vehicle (Nokian WRG2 SUVs) I would have been part of that statistic last week!
The mayhem experience here last Friday was ridiculous. Cars barely reaching 10miles an hour, sliding all over the road and not able to reach the apex of a small bridge, all causing long delays. It was infuriating, because I had to sit behind it all! Once out on the open road, where I have to add, the snow was much deeper, I could easily sit at 40-45mph with confidence. I had no problems on corners, breaking and going up hills - just took everything nice and gently!
