Typography in 8 bits: System fonts » DamienG

Typography in 8 bits: System fonts » DamienG | Type, Typography, Letterforms, Fonts | Scoop.it

My love of typography originated in the 80′s with the golden years of 8-bit home computing and their 8×8 pixel monospaced fonts on low-resolution displays. It’s quite easy to find bitmap copies of these fonts and also scalable traced TTF versions but there’s very little discussion about the fonts themselves. Let’s remedy that by firing up some emulators and investigating the glyphs.

Chris Lott's insight:

Just seeing the examples makes me remember the good old days.

Matthew Carter: My life in typefaces - YouTube

Pick up a book, magazine or screen, and more than likely you'll come across some typography designed by Matthew Carter. In this charming talk, the man behind typefaces such as Verdana, Georgia and Bell Centennial (designed just for phone books — remember them?), takes us on a spin through a career focused on the very last pixel of each letter of a font.
Chris Lott's insight:

The question is, does a constraint force a compromise? By accepting a constraint, are you working to a lower standard? I don't believe so, and I've always been encouraged by something that Charles Eames said. He said he was conscious of working within constraints, but not of making compromises. The distinction between a constraint and a compromise is obviously very subtle, but it's very central to my attitude to work."

Font War: Inside the Design World's $20 Million Divorce

Font War: Inside the Design World's $20 Million Divorce | Type, Typography, Letterforms, Fonts | Scoop.it
Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones redesigned our world with dazzling fonts, working as Hoefler&Frere-Jones. Were they partners?
Chris Lott's insight:

'Debbie Millman, president emeritus of AIGA, the major trade organization for graphic designers, begins by comparing them to John Lennon and Paul McCartney, then stops. “They were famous before they got together, so that’s how they’re not like the Beatles. It’s more like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young,” she says, before pausing again. “You know what—I’ll tell you what they were like. They were like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.”'

Taking A Second Look At Free Fonts | Smashing Magazine

Taking A Second Look At Free Fonts | Smashing Magazine | Type, Typography, Letterforms, Fonts | Scoop.it
The quality of available free fonts has increased dramatically. To be frank, free fonts don’t have a good reputation, and often they are knock-offs of thoroughly crafted, already established typefaces. So is it time for professional designers to take a second look?

A novel tribute to Eric Gill

A novel tribute to Eric Gill | Type, Typography, Letterforms, Fonts | Scoop.it

"Designed and typeset in accordance with Eric Gill's An Essay on Typography, the debut novel from Karen Healey Wallace is a celebration of letterforms. Unsurprisingly, the book itself is a lovely object – using Gill's Joanna typeface throughout, it has 'golden ratio' margins and just wait until you see the spine...

The novel has lettercutting and carving at its heart (with many of Gill's stone inscriptions illustrated on the page), and the subject matter has clearly informed the book itself.

Designed by Jon Muddell, typeset by Ali Dewji, and printed and bound by Smith Settle Printing & Bookbinding Ltd, the book even contains an interesting Note on the Typography which explains how its production adheres to Gill's 1931 treatise."

Chris Lott's insight:

Agree or disagree with Gill's philosophy, this is one beautiful book and I appreciate a publisher that's willing to go through the expense and trouble to produce a novel this way!

Chromatic Wood Type

Chromatic Wood Type | Type, Typography, Letterforms, Fonts | Scoop.it

"Chromatic type is printed from multiple pieces of type, each in a different ink color. The following samples are all from the William H. Page company's 1874 book, 'Specimens of Chromatic Wood Type, Borders, Etc.'[.]. The specimen book was used to sell the wooden pieces of type to printers. The types cost around 25 cents per letter, per ink color.

[In some images you can see] white lines between the [different colors or as part of the letter borders]. That's the paper showing through, and it's an intentional part of the design meant to add another color. Remember, each color is the result of the sheet of paper making a separate pass through the press."

This Font Made From CGI Skin Will Make You Feel Gross | Type, Typography, Letterforms, Fonts | Scoop.it
Benjamin Simon and Dirk Shuster were looking to sharpen their 4-D animation chops outside of the strict briefs and parameters they usually worked within. Working with clients offered little room for experimentation, even less to create a typographic free for all. “That’s when we decided to do a sculpted alphabet,” Simon and Schuster explain. “And we found out it was great fun.”

Typography hair

Typography hair | Type, Typography, Letterforms, Fonts | Scoop.it

The hair letters consist of hundreds of hairs, and give the impression of being fine pen drawings. The basic shape of the letters is created by forming the hairs into a legible character, during which process I follow the natural characteristics of the hairs: curly, rounded corners, springiness. To a great extent, it is the dynamic of the hairs which determines the shape of the letters. The ends of the hairs create an organized chaos, an energetic play of lines which forms a haze around the letter’s basic shape.

Chris Lott's insight:

Cool, but it makes me itchy...
