The Best Music to Work or Study To Could Be Video Game Soundtracks | Tyler Pulford Sound in video games | Scoop.it
Lots of different sounds can make you more productive while you work or study (particularly music you're not familiar with), but video game soundtracks might be the best option of them all if you need to concentrate.
Tyler Pulford's insight:

LifeHacker is, obviously, not exactly a reliable professional source but it does give insight into what the people think about a given topic, specifically the comments section. Most of the time comment sections are riddled with profanity and memes but in this case, it was a collection of people discussing how they treat music and sound in video games with regards to studying. I was amazed at how people with play video game soundtracks to pair with their study time. A small sample albeit, but this is another example of how uniquely people react to sound and music in video games.

Skyrim's Sound Design - YouTube

Mark Lampert, sound designer and audio director at Bethesda, talks about how he constructs the sounds of Skyrim.
Tyler Pulford's insight:

I saw that Alain was doing a similar topic and since Skyrim is my favorite game of all time, I was instantly drawn to this article that he found. It focuses on Mark Lampert and the different techniques he use to create different sound effects in the game. In the suggested videos, there is a whole list of different aspects to the sound of Skyrim but this video in particular perked my interest. How he describes going out and just recording nature while hiking and how he likens his style to that of film work is impressive. Here is an industry professional discussing what potential he hears when he jangles a pair of handcuffs and what role that sound could play. I would love to sit down with this man and talk about the steps he took to get to where he is; he is doing what I want to do.

How Sony Makes Music For Your Favourite Games

How Sony Makes Music For Your Favourite Games | Tyler Pulford Sound in video games | Scoop.it
Music has been an integral part of the experience gamers get out of their favourite past times.
Tyler Pulford's insight:

As a huge fan of video games and music, I get really excited when I read about the work that goes into the sound of the game. Many things are orchestrated by specialists who work with the same process that you would with a music album or a movie score. Playstation are renowned for their sound design in their games and SuckerPunch's inFamous: Second Son looks to be no different. This article gives informative insight to the audio workers who are designing every bit of sound for the game and their respective roles. As someone who aspires to work with sound with video games some day, reading these pieces is uplifting and motivating. Of course, different people react to sound in different ways and there are probably a lot of people who won't even notice the unique sound of a character's footsteps or the slamming of a door or even an explosion, but, it's something that I obsess over and it's what can make or break a game for me.

Journey’s Soundtrack Nominated for a Grammy - IGN

Journey’s Soundtrack Nominated for a Grammy - IGN | Tyler Pulford Sound in video games | Scoop.it
The digital PlayStation 3 game Journey is the first game in history to have its score nominated for a coveted Grammy.
Tyler Pulford's insight:

Having a video game be recognized by the leading audio award show in the world is a huge step for the video game industry as a whole. I love where the industry is going as far as creatively and I think this is only one of the first steps as to where music and sound can go in video games. It's up to indie games like Journey showing the big dogs like Call of Duty that audio is an integral part of the game experience and deserves to be treated as art, rather than solely a means to make money. I'm not ignorant and I realize Call of Duty is an incredible success story, I'm just saying if an indie title can get nominated for a Grammy, imagine what would happen if a global titan like Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto or The Elder Scrolls were nominated.
