Metacognition And Learning: Strategies For Instructional Design | QuickThoughts

Metacognition And Learning: Strategies For Instructional Design | QuickThoughts | Twórcza edukacja | Scoop.it

Do you know how to learn? Many people don’t. Specifically, they don’t know how to look inward to examine how they learn and to judge what is effective.

That’s where metacognitive strategies come in. They are techniques that help people become more successful learners. Shouldn’t this be a crucial goal of instructional design?

Improved metacognition can facilitate both formal and informal learning. It can improve the performance of new tasks on the job and help teams problem solve more effectively.

But let’s start at the beginning. Here are some things instructional designers should know about metacognition.

Digital Passport™ : a game to become #digitalliterate #mediawijsheid

Deborah Fillman's curator insight, November 6, 2013 5:06 PM

Love the idea of teaching kids digital "self-defense," rather than focusing on erecting barriers they might see as challenges to overcome, or "problems" to solve. They not only need to guard against bullies and predators, but also that  that they have a "digital footprint" that will follow them throughout their lives.

Tina Jameson's curator insight, November 7, 2013 5:07 PM

Prepare students for their online future: this freely available online tool allows students to 'play' and work their way through different levels, building up vital understanding of 'digital footprints' and cyber safety in the process.  Seems to be aimed at a junior primary to middle school level.

This article explains how one Librarian has used the tool successfully, and provides links to the 'Digital Passport' program.

A 6-Step Process For Adding Gamification To Your Classroom | TeachThought

A 6-Step Process For Adding Gamification To Your Classroom | TeachThought | Twórcza edukacja | Scoop.it

Gamification is the integration of game-like mechanics into non-game “stuff.”

For years, schools have been gamified. Points for performance. Points accrue to earn “badges” (e.g., letter grades). Students are separated and ranked (e.g., class ranks). Winners of this “game” are celebrated (e.g., valedictorians).

While this approach offers tremendous potential that has yet to be tapped (uncovering the nuance of the learning process, for example), it can also be approached from a simpler point of view–added in to the instructional design process, which the following graphic from Mia MacMeekin takes a look at.

David Bozetarnik's curator insight, April 30, 2014 11:35 PM

Blended learning has much potential.  However, it is only PART of the solution to why ails education today.  It is not a replacement for funding.  Adequate funding, whether online of f2f, must go hand in hand.  You can't maximize the potential of education while cutting necessary $$$.

Innovations to improve student success

Innovations to improve student success | Twórcza edukacja | Scoop.it

Starting students early in structured program pathways and tackling barriers that often derail their college ambitions are part of a statewide strategy to improve student success among North Carolina community colleges.

During a Senate committee hearing Thursday on innovations to improve student success, Scott Ralls, president of the North Carolina Community College System, outlined a four-year effort that is designed to produce a “cultural shift” among the state’s two-year colleges, which serve nearly one in eight adults in North Carolina.
