Micro-blogging can help build your organisational culture

By Dan Pontefract

"In terms of increasing the engagement level and culture of an organisation, micro-blogging can provide several benefits, including:

- Greater understanding of what is actually going on in the organisation across teams or projects;
- Personalizing and demystifying the aura of senior leaders;

- Seeking opinion and exploring options before decisions are made;
- Driving engagement and the feeling that everyone’s opinion is important;
- Increasing social status of employees in business related matters;
- Providing information that is timely through non-formal use;
- Building trust amongst senior leaders and front-line workers in open, transparent ways;

- Weak chance of disrupting already established workflows"

Using Twitter as a Professional Development Tool

I do agree with David Kelly:

"The digital age has provided learning professionals with an amazing opportunity via personal learning networks; and as with most opportunities, this one comes with a risk. PLNs aren't just for learning professionals; it's representative of a fundamental shift in the way people learn. People all around the world are forming PLNs, most without even realizing it yet. It's a natural evolution of our increasingly connected world."

The role of Twitter in Personal Learning Networks

Abstract

This qualitative phenomenological study involving in-depth interviews with seven educators in K-12 and higher education examines the role that the microblogging service Twitter plays in the formation and development of Personal Learning Networks (PLN) among educators. A double hermeneutic data analysis shows that Twitter plays a role in the formation and development of PLNs by allowing educators to; engage in consistent and sustained dialogue with their PLN, access the collective knowledge of their PLN, amplify and promote more complex thoughts and ideas to a large audience, and expand their PLN using features unique to Twitter. This research also examines the nature of a PLN and shows that participants believe their PLN extends beyond their Twitter network to encompass both face-to-face and other ICT mediated relationships. Secondary research questions examine how Twitter differs from other social networking tools in mediating relationships within a PLN, what motivates an educator to develop a PLN, how trust is established in a PLN, what the expectations of reciprocity are within a PLN, and what is the nature of informal learning within a PLN.

10 Commandments of Twitter for Academics

10 Commandments of Twitter for Academics | Twitter - Professional Tool | Scoop.it

Some ideas by Katrina Gulliver

"1. Put up an avatar. It doesn't really matter what the picture is, but the "egg picture" (the default avatar for new accounts) makes you look like a spammer.

2. Don't pick a Twitter name that is difficult to spell or remember.

3. Tweet regularly.

4. Don't ignore people who tweet at you. Set Twitter to send you an e-mail notification when you get a mention or a private message. If you don't do that, then check your account frequently.

5. Engage in conversation. Don't just drop in to post your own update and disappear. Twitter is not a "broadcast-only" mechanism; it's CB radio.

6. Learn the hashtags for your subject field or topics of interest, and use them.

7. Don't just make statements. Ask questions.

8. Don't just post links to news articles. I don't need you to be my aggregator.

9. Do show your personality. Crack some jokes.

10. Have fun."

The Ultimate Twitter List Curation Tool: TwitChimp

The Ultimate Twitter List Curation Tool: TwitChimp | Twitter - Professional Tool | Scoop.it

TwitChimp.com is a web application that leverages the Twitter API to provide curated lists of Twitter users. The application is still in a beta testing period but is open to any who would like to try it in this early stage of development.

The purpose of TwitChimp.com is to enable any Twitter user to create and curate directories of Twitter users.

Curated lists are important because they can help reduce the signal to noise ratio in Twitter.

Here are some features:

- An ability to easily create and curate feature-filled lists of twitter accounts on any topic you desire.
- Summation of top concepts/words and hashtags in tweets for an entire list, and a hotlinking of those words to Twitter searches.
- Generation of statistics for lists and users in lists.
- An ability to discover lists by category.
- Search tools enabling lists to be found by keywords in the list or by bios of users.

Tools and methods for capturing Twitter data during natural disasters

Tools and methods for capturing Twitter data during natural disasters | Twitter - Professional Tool | Scoop.it

By Axel Bruns and Yuxian Eugene Liang

First Monday, Volume 17, Number 4 - 2 April 2012

Abstract:

During the course of several natural disasters in recent years, Twitter has been found to play an important role as an additional medium for many–to–many crisis communication. Emergency services are successfully using Twitter to inform the public about current developments, and are increasingly also attempting to source first–hand situational information from Twitter feeds (such as relevant hashtags). The further study of the uses of Twitter during natural disasters relies on the development of flexible and reliable research infrastructure for tracking and analysing Twitter feeds at scale and in close to real time, however. This article outlines two approaches to the development of such infrastructure: one which builds on the readily available open source platform yourTwapperkeeper to provide a low–cost, simple, and basic solution; and, one which establishes a more powerful and flexible framework by drawing on highly scaleable, state–of–the–art technology.

Grassroots Professional Development: How Teachers Use Twitter

Abstract

"In an exploratory study, we used survey, interviews and content analysis techniques to understand how educators appropriate Twitter and other social media in their practice.
We report on teachers’ use of Twi tter , structural features of their on and offline professional networks, and the institutional policies that shape their appropriation of social media for professional use. Most importantly, our analysis suggests teachers on Twitter tend to be eager adopters of technologies and well positioned to broker information as bridges between members of their local communities of practice and other networks of educators. Based on these findings, we discuss teachers on Twitter as participants in grassroots professional development efforts and the potential for them to be powerful fomenters and enactors of reform in educational communities."
