This Guy Built a Bot to Expose Dead Start-ups

This Guy Built a Bot to Expose Dead Start-ups | Twitter Bots | Scoop.it

Caspar Wrede doesn’t think we should so easily forget the startups of Silicon Valley yesteryear. So the Berlin-based product manager built a Twitter bot called Deathwatch that monitors the health of tech start-ups. Companies that haven’t tweeted for 40 days are declared “unwell.” Those that have been inactive for 180 days or more are officially pronounced dead.

Practical Natural Language Processing with Hostel Reviews

Practical Natural Language Processing with Hostel Reviews | Twitter Bots | Scoop.it

I was planning my trip to Amsterdam in January and was looking through hostels inHostel World filtering for different features and amenities. One amenity that I thought I would definitely need was free wifi if I wanted to do some programming from the hostel and also just because life demands it in general. While there’s a ton of hostels that offer free wifi, I’ve definitely been at the end of the stick where the quality of wifi has been unmentionably bad. This probably goes for hotels as well as hostels, but generally hostels are cheaper and offer less in the way of complementary services.

The botmaker who sees through the Internet - The Boston Globe

The botmaker who sees through the Internet - The Boston Globe | Twitter Bots | Scoop.it
For the past few years, tiny computer programs have been telling jokes, writing poems, complaining, commenting on the news, and awkwardly flirting—on the Web and through the medium of Twitter. One of the most prolific makers of these bots, as they’re known, is 30-year-old Darius Kazemi, a computer programmer who lives in Somerville. Kazemi is part of a small but vibrant group of programmers who, in addition to making clever Web toys, have dedicated themselves to shining a spotlight on the algorithms and data streams that are nowadays humming all around us, and using them to mount a sharp social critique of how people use the Internet—and how the Internet uses them back.

Slate’s Seven Favorite Twitter Bots of 2015 | Twitter Bots | Scoop.it

New technologies have a way of generating novel forms of creativity. By forcing us to work within certain limits, constraints encourage us to explore our capacities. Few contemporary forms are more rigorously restricted than Twitter, where character limits have inspired whole classes of jokes. But the best consequence of Twitter may be the bots that populate it.

Academics have taken to Twitter like academics on a grant . Buzzfeed has posted a list of 25 twitter feeds for nerds, Science published a somewhat contentious list of scientists to follow, and I’m on twitter, so obviously all the cool kids are there. Bot or Not? by James Gleick

Bot or Not? by James Gleick | Twitter Bots | Scoop.it

Because the Twitterverse is made of text, rather than rocks and trees and bones and blood, it’s suddenly quite easy to make bots. Now there are millions, by Twitter’s own estimates—most of them short-lived and invisible nuisances. All they need to do is read text and write text. For example, there is a Twitter creature going by the name of @ComposedOf, whose life is composed of nothing more than searching for tweets containing the phrase “comprised of.”
