John Blevins's insight:

Basic info HUB for TPP and the current endeavors of the channel. This is yet another resource that people are using to try and get as much advantage as they can to complete the game.  Some might argue that using outside sources o help complete the game is cheating or outside the spirit of the experiment, but I think that people using any means necessary to try and complete the task shows much more about the nature of people and how they use the internet than watching them fail miserably.

John Blevins's insight:

This is a map of a part of the game that is particularly difficult with random inputs.  It is also a part of the game that could theoretically make the game unwinnable if done wrong enough times.  This was posted to try and get people to work together so that the game could be finished.  This is part of the meta game that goes beyond just playing the game.  It's things like these that on one hand kind of "cheat" the game, but on the other hand give us other insights to the human condition.  If people are given certain restrictions to complete a task that they can't, they'll try to break those restrictions in order to overcome the challenge.

Here's What Happens When Thousands Play Pokemon Together

Here's What Happens When Thousands Play Pokemon Together | Twitch Plays Pokemon curation | Scoop.it
For the past week, a social experiment has been going on in the gaming community: a democratically played video game on community site Twitch. A site exec says the result is chaotic but inspiring.
John Blevins's insight:

Like the xkcd strip, this shows just how big an event TPP was.  When NPR, a station that couldn't be less equipped to care about Pokemon or internet culture, covers the story it really must have a large impact. It's things like these that really lead me to believe that this type of completely interactive media source is going to be the next generation of media consumption.

John Blevins's insight:

An Egyptian themed story of TPP.  This type of picture is the real culmination of the cultism that TPP has spawned.  While I suppose most people are doing it to be funny or ironic, it still leads to some deeper questions as to why people gravitate towards doing like this in the first place?  There are not very many types of media that are going to spawn a cult following to this extent so quickly.

John Blevins's insight:

This is an extensive showcase of what happened in the first week of TPP.  The video also starts to talk about the lore that has been created by the users to describe what's going on in the TPP run.  We really start to get a glimpse of next level of internet usage that TPP has created

John Blevins's insight:

The second video in the series.  We really are starting to get to a point where the events being described are much more about the "meta game" rather than the actual in game events.  The lore and story coupled with the extreme antics of the chat are much more the focus of the game than actually completing it.

John Blevins's insight:

This is an essay detailing to controversy of "Anarchy vs Democracy" modes on TPP.  Many of the fans thought that democracy mode ruined the game, but here we see that it actually made the game even better.  The implementation of the mode really does say something about the nature of  large groups, namely that they can't get anything done without order.  It's almost an allegory for the internet in general.  There are thousands (millions on the internet) of people interacting in a mostly unregulated space.  The internet is one of the last places where it can be considered a "wild west" in terms of sanctions, but even it has some order to it. Without it, nothing would ever get done.  It's interesting to see if the future of the internet will go towards more or less order.  Both have their positives and their negatives, though it seems like humans as a species tend to favor order over anarchy at least when it comes to trying to complete tasks.

John Blevins's insight:

An internet meme about TPP.  I found this one particularly interesting because of its subtle implications about the nature of TPP.  When I think about TPP I imagine it as a completely random and chaotic environment where anyone and everyone is at all times.  This meme really made me think about the implications of time and progress in the game.  At certain points in the game, the game will invariably be controlled by a majority of people in a given timezone.  This opens up a whole new discussion about how certain people from certain regions tend to work together.  At face value TPP is elaborate, but ultimately can be grasped, but once you start digging deeper it has even further reaching implications.

xkcd: First Date

John Blevins's insight:

An xkcd strip referencing TPP.  This is showing just how big of an impact that TPP had on internet culture as it is infecting other completely unrelated internet sources.  While this is not a very large leap to make, I could see something similar happening in the future with something more mainstream and tangible.

John Blevins's insight:

I absolutely had to include this here.  While this is obviously a classic Simpsons parody, the original concept that it is parodying is wholly relevant to TPP.  The concept is infinite monkey theorem which in essence states that given an infinite amount of time and an infinite number of random character generators, you would almost surely create a chosen text, most famous chosen is Shakespeare's Hamlet.  While TPP isn't an exact proving of this theorem by any stretch, it does give us some insight as to how a random group of thousands of people can complete a defined goal.

John Blevins's insight:

The third and final summation video in the series.  This is where "the hive mind" ends up beating the game. The author notes that this is "a moment in internet history" and that it has "created a religion".  The cult following of these internet phenomenon is amazing in and of itself, but we see here that the original questioned posed (or at least the logical one to ask at the onset of TPP) was answered.  If you have thousands of random people trying to play Pokemon at once, you can in fact finish the game given enough time.
