Development of a 300 kWe Integrated Axial Turbine and Generator for ORC Applications

Concepts NREC has completed its design and development of an integrated high speed axial turbine and permanent magnet generator. The Turbine –Generator Unit (TGU) is ideal for ORC applications for its compactness, reliability, and versatility. The 20,000 rpm TGU does not use a shaft seal or gearbox and the generator is evaporatively cooled using the ORC working fluid. The TGU is designed with the intent of having the same turbine housing and generator used with a range of operating ORC fluid operating pressures and temperatures to enable its wide spread use in a variety of ORC heat recovery applications. The rotor and nozzle stators are changed to aerodynamically optimize the performance of the turbine at different ORC fluid operating conditions and flow rates. The output voltage of the generator can range from 300 to 480 VAC and at 50 hz and 60 hz. This facilitates its use in waste heat recovery applications throughout the world. This technical paper will review the mechanical and electrical design features of the turbine-generator unit.

A study at the University West (Högskolan Väst) investigated the shape and number of cracks in gas turbine coating and found that not all cracks are bad.

The surface coating used on gas turbines to increase lifespan, consists of two layers – one of metal to protect against oxidation and corrosion , and a ceramic one for thermal insulation. A proposal for a new design
Due to its unique characteristics, wind speed can be gradually recovered to the inflow velocity, Vo, after passing over an object. Now assume the diameter of the wind rotor is infinitely large and the blades are located relatively low. After the wind passes over the upwind blades, the wind speed recovers gradually to inflow velocity. When the wind arrives the downwind side, the blades there encounter the same velocity the upwind blades encountered earlier. As displayed in Extracting power from a VAWT , the blades at most positions in the first and fourth quadrants extract the greatest power. If we separate the rotor at line A-A and extend the rotor to A’-A’, we now have two half circles connected by a rectangle (A design for the Super Turbine) and all the blades in the A-A’ sections will extract the biggest power. This is the basic principle of the super turbine. It is based on real time, active-pitch technique for vertical axis wind turbines.

The $892,292 contract funds a design study to determine the viability of a TBCC propulsion system by combining one of several current turbine engines, with a very low Mach ignition Dual Mode Ramjet (DMRJ). NASA previously funded a Lockheed Martin study that found speeds up to Mach 7 could be achieved with a dual-mode engine combining turbine and ramjet technologies.

A simpler, smaller, cleaner machine
The term "supercritical" describes the state of carbon dioxide above its critical temperature and pressure, 31 degrees Celsius and 73 atmospheres. Under these conditions, carbon dioxide has a density similar to its liquid state and fills containers the way it would as a gas.

 

Supercritical turbines would also be an attractive upgrade from steam systems aboard ships and submarines, producing the same power while occupying less space. Because they use carbon dioxide instead of water as their process fluid, these turbines would also work well in drought-stricken areas.

In addition, a supercritical turbine could fit into a directly heated cycle, where a fuel like natural gas burns in the presence of pure oxygen inside the turbine, creating only water and carbon dioxide as waste.

In Singapore, a group of researchers at the Lloyd’s Register Global Technology Center, and their partners at the Institute for High Performance Computing, are working to help bring about a tool that could help develop a cost competitive FOWT design. So far there is a significant amount of data gathered on fixed wind turbines. Tools such as the Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures and Turbulence (FAST) Code have provided a means to simulate loads and predict performance. The Blade Element Momentum (BEM) method is the basis for most of the wind turbine analysis software currently used in the market. However, its theory is based on the assumption that the rotor plane is normal to the wind direction. Taking a step in a new direction, these researchers are assessing FOWT characteristics by using higher-fidelity prediction models based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) that can account for the six degrees of movement of the floating offshore wind turbine.

Turbomachinery is a single term given to the devices involving extracting or adding energy to the moving fluid. Its example could be a turbine using kinetic energy of the fluid to rotate the blades and convert the energy into mechanical work; or a compressor, which uses the kinetic energy of the moving blades to compress the fluid and increase its pressure. These rotating machines or turbomachinery are often being evaluated for performance using CFD techniques, as analytical solution is often difficult and time-consuming. CFD simulations can be extremely useful in predicting the performance, visualize internal flow distribution and investigating existing design.
