The Surprising Health Effects of Empathy

"The question that researchers have been asking is why do some people get stressed in one situation, but others don’t? The answer they found: empathy...

What we don’t know is why some people handle stress so well while others crack? For example, tight deadlines can be stressful to some people, but invigorating to some. The question that researchers have been asking is why do some people get stressed in one situation, but others don’t? The answer they found: empathy....

What Dr. Higgins found was stunning: those who undergo empathy training interacted with patients more compassion - yet their stress levels in emotionally intense encounters decreased..."

Resilience Meet Apple

"But I'm good at being uncomfortable, so
I can't stop changing all the time

I notice that my opponent is always on the go
-And-
Won't go slow, so's not to focus, and I notice
He'll hitch a ride with any guide, as long as
They go fast from whence he came
- But he's no good at being uncomfortable, so
He can't stop staying exactly the same"

Fiona Apple's an Extraordinary Machine.  Rarely will you come upon such pure, unabashed honesty taking shape from such a pretty mouth.

Echoes of a Lost Dream

Consideration - Reef

"Could you give consideration to something that you did not realize or would you close your ears to the things you did not believe?"

Reef was an English band with an infectious sincerity that found notable commercial success in 95-97.  Reef came up for a spot of air in 2012, bringing a little Consideration with them.

Is their sentiment any less relevant today than it was 15 years ago?

Love Life: Self-Watering Planters

Love Life: Self-Watering Planters | Truth, Beauty, Love | Scoop.it

Oh the conditions outside are frightful
But inside is so delightful
And since we've no space to go
Let it grow! Let it grow! Let it grow!

Self-watering planters!

Love life, love beauty, and worry less about inadvertantly turning into a serial plant-killer.

I Died for Beauty, but was Scarce - Emily Dickinson

I died for beauty, but was scarce
Adjusted in the tomb,
When one who died for truth was lain
In an adjoining room.

He questioned softly why I failed?
"For beauty," I replied.
"And I for truth, -the two are one;
We brethren are," he said.

And so, as kinsmen met a night,
We talked between the rooms,
Until the moss had reached our lips,
And covered up our names.

Meteora, 'Suspended in the Air'

Meteora, 'Suspended in the Air' | Truth, Beauty, Love | Scoop.it

According to UNESCO, "In a region of almost inaccessible sandstone peaks, monks settled on these 'columns of the sky' from the 11th century onwards. Twenty-four of these monasteries were built, despite incredible difficulties, at the time of the great revival of the eremetic ideal in the 15th century. Their 16th-century frescoes mark a key stage in the development of post-Byzantine painting."

Once a place of sanctuary, the sparsely inhabited monastaries of Meteora are now attractions with steps cut into the rocks to make an easy path for the tourist.

When our eyes catch upon the form of beauty do they dig in search of a narrative or flit mindlessly over a veneer?  In appreciation of Beauty we can elevate it to a place of reverence, or take from it what satisfies our pleasure before leaving it in common.  Let us find ways to inspire a culture of reverence over indulgence so that we might give back something greater than what we were given.  How can we find the narratives that move us to action?

Man's Search for Meaning - Viktor Frankl

Man's Search for Meaning - Viktor Frankl | Truth, Beauty, Love | Scoop.it

If I could say there was one book you needed to read in life it would be this book. Read this book.

"Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl's memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. Frankl's theory—known as logotherapy, from the Greek word logos ("meaning")—holds that our primary drive in life is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but the discovery and pursuit of what we personally find meaningful."

I wish I'd lived during the same time as this man not because his ideas showed me something new, but because they echoed the familiar.
