Africa's Lions May Be Deemed Threatened in U.S.—Will It Help?

Africa's Lions May Be Deemed Threatened in U.S.—Will It Help? | Trophy Hunting: It's Impact on Wildlife and People | Scoop.it

Lions may get protection under the U.S. Endangered Species Act—even though all the wild populations are in Africa....

Even if lions are listed as threatened, U.S. hunters could still import lions that they had killed in Africa as trophies—as long as they get permits from countries with a "scientifically sound" approach to managing lions, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service.

U.S. sportsmen and -women kill the most lions, elephants, and rhinoceroses on the African continent, according to the agency, but properly regulated sport hunting is not considered a major threat to the species....

A threatened designation will build on existing lion conservation programs in Africa by adding "motivation and incentive to cooperate, and galvanizing opinion that lions are in trouble," Ashe said.

"Lions tell us a story. This is one of the world's most iconic, majestic creatures, so this tells us something about what's happening on [our] planet."...

Hunting no longer about meat

Tom Kuglin got his goat and is a proud, ecstatic, “manhood” tested hunter of yore. He has stalked, hunkered and crouched until his 600 yard rifle provided the necessary disadvantage.

Tom is like other adolescents who buy into the creed of “hunting” in the wildness. He has fallen for the bloated rhetoric behind gun counters or has simply fallen for the ethic of the hunt (but not a hungry hunt)...

Why I don’t hunt

Why I don’t hunt | Trophy Hunting: It's Impact on Wildlife and People | Scoop.it
I find hunting abhorrent simply because they enjoy it. It disgusts me that I am part of a species that takes great joy in the killing of animals. Hunters don’t just enjoy killing an animal, they relish in it, take great pride in their accomplishment, brag about it and mount the horns (or the whole head) somewhere in their home as proof of their prowess.
