Trophy hunting - Wikipedia

Trophy hunting - Wikipedia | Trophy Hunting: It's Impact on Wildlife and People | Scoop.it

Trophy hunting is the selective hunting of wild game animals...

Trophy hunting has firm supporters and opponents.

Public debate about trophy hunting often centres on the question of the morality of sport hunting and the question of the extent to which the money paid by trophy hunters benefits the population of game animals and the local economy.

It is difficult to imagine an Africa without one of its most popular and revered creatures, the lion. Known by many as the King of the Jungle, the lion has traversed the wide-open spaces of Africa for centuries, capturing the hearts and imaginations of people around the world. New Jersey: ‘True facts’ about state’s bear hunt

.....

Bow hunters have a 55 percent overall wounding rate, averaging 17 shots per kill as documented, independent reports show. A bow hunter with a Warthog compound bow could reach a person, child or pet standing at his back door within a half a second.

A May 2014 article showed a bear had a misfired arrow removed from its face and mouth by a vet in Mine Hill. The vet stated, “Normally when they get shot in the face or head you expect them to die in the winter"......

LETTER: Trophy hunting should stop

LETTER: Trophy hunting should stop | Trophy Hunting: It's Impact on Wildlife and People | Scoop.it

I want to comment on the West Kootenay Big Game and Trophy Association’s 58th annual awards banquet.

With species fading away, it is disgusting these people are still presenting and bragging about trophies. Trophy hunting robs the gene pool of whatever species of the best to carry on further generations. Help make the 58th banquet be the last. The picture in the ad showed a grizzly bear whose numbers are so low.

Trophy hunting is not acceptable and should be a crime, not an event.

Why the hunting conversation hurts conservation

The thing about hunting is that the topic is so polarising that it prevents meaningful discourse between people who probably have more in common than they care to admit. And, while the protagonists battle it out, the grim reapers continue to harvest Africa’s wildlife and other natural resources....

Corey Knowlton's quest to import trophy of endangered rhino granted by USFW

In a decision that's certain to rile animal rights activists, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed the last hurdle in the way of Corey Knowlton's quest. More than a year after the wealthy Texan submitted the winning $350,000 bid for a Namibian government permit at a Dallas auction to shoot the animal, the agency announced that it approved his application for a separate U.S. permit to import the animal's carcass back home as a trophy.

As soon as Knowlton verifies that funds sitting in an escrow account have been wired to Namibia, a Fish and Wildlife official said, the permit is his.....

South African Ranchers Breed Mutant Animals to Hunt

South African Ranchers Breed Mutant Animals to Hunt | Trophy Hunting: It's Impact on Wildlife and People | Scoop.it

Let's breed strange, beautiful animals just to shoot them, because that's not depressing at all.

You could put $50,000 toward the downpayment for a house, but why throw your money away like that when you could plunk it down to hunt a specially bred mutant animal on a ranch in South Africa?

Yes, you read that correctly. According to a Bloomberg report, ranchers like Barry York find animals with different-than-normal appearances, capture them, and breed them, with the hopes that their variations will pass on to offspring. The result? White lions, golden gnu, white impalas ... animals rarely seen in nature but available to hunt on these South African ranches. For a price, that is. It costs $30,000 to $50,000 for the chance to go trophy hunting....

South African hunters say no to golden gnus, black impalas

The South African Hunters and Game Conservation Association is calling on the government to regulate game breeding designed to produce animals with exotic....

Antelope color variants such as the black impala, golden wildebeest, or gnu, and white springbok result from recessive genes that usually leave the animal at a disadvantage in the wild, the associated said in an emailed statement on Thursday.

"These practices of deliberately selecting and breeding animals for specific traits, similar to stock farming, to produce unusual coat colors or very large horn-lengths are not compatible with conservation principles," Gerhard Verdoorn, the president of the association, said in the statement

EU set to ban lion hunting trophy imports

EU set to ban lion hunting trophy imports | Trophy Hunting: It's Impact on Wildlife and People | Scoop.it

The move has been welcomed by animal welfare activists, with Liberal MEP Catherine Bearder calling it "a vitally important step for the conservation of lions and other endangered species".

A survey revealed last year that, tragically, there are only about 400 lions left in the wild in west Africa.

Up until now, the convention on international trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora (Cites) listed lions as a protected species, whereby trade in lion parts was strictly regulated.

However, these regulations do not apply to hunting trophies, as they are considered "household and personal effects" by the treaty.

Bearder explained that "this derogation had allowed people to use the EU as a route for trading animal parts for use in quack medicines"....
