Poaching fines get super-sized next year

Poaching fines get super-sized next year | Trophy Hunting: It's Impact on Wildlife and People | Scoop.it
The possible cost of getting caught poaching a trophy-class animal in Kansas will skyrocket in 2013.

For instance, get busted with an illegal whitetail deer that flirts with the magical 200 inches of antler and it could cost $20,000. An illegal bull elk that scores 350 inches could run you $45,000.

A poached mule deer with 130 inches of antler, which could be a 2-year-old buck, could run $1,800.

Trophy hunting is the selective hunting of wild game animals...

Trophy hunting has firm supporters and opponents.

Public debate about trophy hunting often centres on the question of the morality of sport hunting and the question of the extent to which the money paid by trophy hunters benefits the population of game animals and the local economy.

Africa's Lions May Be Deemed Threatened in U.S.—Will It Help?

Africa's Lions May Be Deemed Threatened in U.S.—Will It Help? | Trophy Hunting: It's Impact on Wildlife and People | Scoop.it

Lions may get protection under the U.S. Endangered Species Act—even though all the wild populations are in Africa....

Even if lions are listed as threatened, U.S. hunters could still import lions that they had killed in Africa as trophies—as long as they get permits from countries with a "scientifically sound" approach to managing lions, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service.

U.S. sportsmen and -women kill the most lions, elephants, and rhinoceroses on the African continent, according to the agency, but properly regulated sport hunting is not considered a major threat to the species....

A threatened designation will build on existing lion conservation programs in Africa by adding "motivation and incentive to cooperate, and galvanizing opinion that lions are in trouble," Ashe said.

"Lions tell us a story. This is one of the world's most iconic, majestic creatures, so this tells us something about what's happening on [our] planet."...

Via LionAid. From Pieter Kat's blog...

This is taken from a hunt report involving Neil Duckworth, a professional hunter with Mokore Safaris in Zimbabwe and the woman hunter pictured above:

“We were able to take [a] nice buffalo cow on the first morning. By the afternoon hours she was hanging in two locations for lion bait after a lot of time and effort was put into selecting the perfect bait / blind sites.

On day 2 we spent most of the day trying for a zebra to add to our lion baits and building blinds at the existing bait sites from the day before. With all set all we needed was for a lion to show.

On day 3 … we saw a big lion track...

Why I don’t hunt

Why I don’t hunt | Trophy Hunting: It's Impact on Wildlife and People | Scoop.it
I find hunting abhorrent simply because they enjoy it. It disgusts me that I am part of a species that takes great joy in the killing of animals. Hunters don’t just enjoy killing an animal, they relish in it, take great pride in their accomplishment, brag about it and mount the horns (or the whole head) somewhere in their home as proof of their prowess.
