| Competences@work - Trends | Scoop.it
Sophie Lijnen's insight:

2 faits remarquables:

Future Leadership is getting the job done.

Future Leadership is getting the job done. | Competences@work - Trends | Scoop.it
Sophie Lijnen's insight:

This functional perspective is central in more collective or shared leadership thinkingThe leader’s main job is to do, or get done, whatever is not being adequately handled for group needs”. This definition from McGrath (1962) emphasizes that leadership is not about style and social correct behavior. Directive, authentic, authoritarian, empowering: it doesn’t matter as long as the leader contributes to the achievement of goals. Leadership is a combination of different roles and anyone can take them up (e.g. Morgeson et al. 2010; Pearce et al. 2014).

This perspective is liberating. Does it mean that it makes no sense to push leaders into a certain style? What kind of training do we have to develop then for future leaders? In other words how can we develop the leaders in all of us?

Kerncompetenties toekomstige leiders. | Competences@work - Trends | Scoop.it
Sophie Lijnen's insight:

Forrester: CIOs need to support the workplace of the future now
ComputerWeekly.com
Workplace diversity is on the rise, at the expense of the traditional corporate office – in some countries more than others.
Sophie Lijnen's insight:

Want more success in the workplace? Make better friends | Deseret News | Competences@work - Trends | Scoop.it
According to a study by Lifeboat, an organization that explores “the art and science of friendship,” 50 percent of baby boomers (those age 50-69) met at least one of their closest friends
Sophie Lijnen's insight:

To keep in mind:

- the older (> 50 years) you are the more chances of having a few real good friends in the workplace

- it is the quality of the relation that matters, and not the quantity

- productivity and loyalty are higher with friendship relations

A surprise?

Sophie Lijnen's insight:

Experienced people grew up during their active life at work with email. How easy this was for those who only knew telephone, letters and faxes to communicate! Youngsters today rarely use email between themselves. Time for the experienced workers to get used to the other communication -tools ?

Information professional, a future job, or a core skill for the majority of us all?

Information professional, a future job, or a core skill for the majority of us all? | Competences@work - Trends | Scoop.it
Sophie Lijnen's insight:
The ‘core’ skill of being able to gather, use and present data and information, is mandatory or strongely desired in a growing number of jobs.

How will the core skill of ‘gathering, using and presenting’ data be taught, preserved and assessed?

At Fopas we are putting some aspects foreward:

- Structuring Information & ideas

- Memorization

- Rapid reading

- Reporting based on relevant criteria

At least some techniques . But will this be enough to maintain this skill that loses its capaticity  &  elasticity with age? Especially since we all will have to work longer. What does it mean for the workforce in our sector where the average age is quite high?

Be aware of your energy level before making decisions, especially in the afternoon

Be aware of your energy level before making decisions, especially in the afternoon | Competences@work - Trends | Scoop.it
Sophie Lijnen's insight:

People’s tendency to be untruthful is greater in the afternoon than in the morning, the researchers found in a recent Harvard study. They attributed this result to the “psychological depletion” people experience as a day wears on, which makes them cognitively weaker. A day of meetings, phone calls and other office work would be so tiring that it would push employees into making an unethical choice. So be aware of your energy level before making a decision, even a small one, like answering a client!

Werk terwijl je reist ... aantrekkelijk of niet?

Sophie Lijnen's insight:

We do not need to worry about the future ...

We do not need to worry about the future ... | Competences@work - Trends | Scoop.it
Sophie Lijnen's insight:

We do not need to worry about the future, the future is death. It is a symptom of the Industrial age, an age about going forward, about growth, about problems with a beginning, middle and end.  An age we are leaving behind, says media theorist Douglas Rushkoff in his new book "Present Shock"

Problems now are chronic (ex. global warming) and cannot be addressed through “victory”, but rather through learning to deal with and abatement.

With an ongoing approach to behavior we start looking at it more like the Internet. In a constant "now" in which problems can be managed in a sustainable way, the future starts to look "less like a story and more like a video game." So the new technology helps us to live in the present.

Through this ongoing solving in the present some fundamental things change. For example:  “we’re going to move into a world where retirement will be more secure if you’ve made lots of friends with young people rather than collected lots of money.”
