Robots Improve Productivity and Create not Kill Jobs

Robots Improve Productivity and Create not Kill Jobs | TRENDS THAT MATTER | Scoop.it
Nearly 30 years ago, in 1987, the Nobel-winning economist Robert Solow surveyed the impact of IT on the economy and concluded that “you can see the computer age everywhere but in the productivity statistics.” Solow’s quip crystallized a frustrating...
FRANK FEATHER ~ Business Futurist's insight:

For hundreds of years, technology has been substituted for human labor. At one time, we were all farmers using hand tools. Then machines and tractors were introduced. Machines also paved the way for the factory revolution, creating millions of jobs and boosting economic output. It is the same with computers and robots. So banking machines replaced bank tellers, but those machines had to be designed, manufactured, delivered, installed, maintained, serviced and replaced -- creating different skilled and higher paying jobs. So it will always be. We have to look ahead and educate and train people for future jobs, not those being made obsolete by technology.

The 15 Most Profitable Industries - In Photos

The 15 Most Profitable Industries - In Photos | TRENDS THAT MATTER | Scoop.it
Financial information company Sageworks has released its ranking of the most profitable industries. By analyzing the financial statements of privately held companies and scaling net profit margin over the last 12 months, Sageworks found seven of the top 15 industries are related to health care or real estate. The list also includes many service-based businesses that can keep costs low while charging premiums, noted Sageworks analyst Jenna Weaver. While the top three industries remain the same as last year, there are some shifts and newcomers. For some perspective, the average profit for privately held companies is 7.2%, according to Sageworks data. Net profit margins exclude taxes and include owner compensation in excess of their market-rate salaries.

Interesting review. Of course, profitability varies depending on competition, globalization, and economic cycles in various sectors.

Is social media's bubble bursting? | TRENDS THAT MATTER | Scoop.it
Three social media companies' shares have dropped by nearly a quarter this week on disappointing outlooks. What's the story?
FRANK FEATHER ~ Business Futurist's insight:

For sure, social media stocks are way over-priced. They are losing advertisers, and members are jaded, resulting in slower growth or declines. The platforms are mass media, yet that era has passed. Unless they demassify, they will ultimately fail and be replaced by custom-tailored offerings.

Why millennials and the Depression-era generation are more similar than you think

Why millennials and the Depression-era generation are more similar than you think | TRENDS THAT MATTER | Scoop.it
Both generations grew up amid a major financial crisis, making them less willing to spend and more likely to save. What sets them a part, though, is the burden of student loans.
FRANK FEATHER ~ Business Futurist's insight:

Consumers will have a "depression-era mentality" for at least 10 years, if not an entire generation, characterized by frugal spending, a search for value, and less consumerism. This will not change or moderate until we have full employment again (around 3%) and until my forecast economic Super Boom is well entrenched. But there will be another modest economic cycle slowdown in the 2020s that will keep consumers frugal.
