Will MOOCs finally bring about McLuhan's vision of Classrooms without Walls?

The timing is right for these changes. We have students who are adapted to using a global Internet and whose milieu is collaborative, multi-national and multi-cultural. The only aspect of their lives that isn’t is their schooling that is only now opening up with regular use of computers and the Internet. The same is true of their university that actively takes pride in the walls constraining their outlook and learning. The good news is that universities are beginning to recognize that the buildings are a liability and that they all have the potential to go beyond them.

edX Offers Free Online Courses

edX has also adopted a computerized grading program that automatically grades classwork and tests, which will eventually be upgraded and capable of marking essays. Students taking online courses will receive a certificate of mastery (no college credits) if they have completed the course on a satisfactory level.

Career Education Corp. has begun one of higher education’s broadest experiments with adaptive learning. Institutions in the for-profit chain have powered more than 300 online course sections with the emerging technology, and enrollments in those courses have topped 11,000 students.
Broadly defined, adaptive learning is the use of data-driven tools to design coursework that responds to individual students’ abilities. Courses featuring adaptive technology typically use assessments to constantly adjust content, giving students extra help to master concepts or to skip ones they already understand.
