Balancing Culture and Strategy: Innovation at the Modern University

Balancing Culture and Strategy: Innovation at the Modern University | TRENDS IN HIGHER EDUCATION | Scoop.it

Building up trust with faculty and staff is critical for leaders who plan to make changes that fly against institutional culture. Functionally driving change forward requires honesty and openness with key stakeholders, and working with faculty and staff to identify and highlight change leaders. It’s critical for leaders to invest time and attention to actually helping to change institutional culture to move toward the vision they have for the organization.

This article shares some of the financial difficulties in public higher education systems today. What will public higher ed. look like in 10-15 years? I would suspect less locations and program options which is sad to think but the most likely outcome.

This Way To The All-Star Degree?

This Way To The All-Star Degree? | TRENDS IN HIGHER EDUCATION | Scoop.it
Perhaps a true business model is emerging for MOOCs?  We never thought free was a sustainable model. This arrangement also puts ASU in a great position to be the “credit bundler” we discussed in an earlier post. The business model itself may not be that innovative, what is important is who uses the model first and, in this case, ASU gains first mover advantage and could profit handsomely from doing so.

The eight essentials of innovation

The eight essentials of innovation | TRENDS IN HIGHER EDUCATION | Scoop.it
Big companies do not easily reinvent themselves as leading innovators. Too many fixed routines and cultural factors can get in the way. For those that do make the attempt, innovation excellence is often built in a multiyear effort that touches most, if not all, parts of the organization. Our experience and research suggest that any company looking to make this journey will maximize its probability of success by closely studying and appropriately assimilating the leading practices of high-performing innovators. Taken together, these form an essential operating system for innovation within a company’s organizational structure and culture.

Are Students Customers?

Are Students Customers? | TRENDS IN HIGHER EDUCATION | Scoop.it

Everything we know about where the higher education mission is headed today indicates that the notion of the student as a customer is becoming dominant in this trade-off and a big part of me is pained by the fact that, for example, the humanities and liberal arts are the losers, and with them, the pursuit of learning for its sake. But it seems impossible to head off this overwhelming demand for measurable value-added in the credential and the almost totally consumer-driven approach to postsecondary study, with its MOOCs, competency-based credit, the $10K BA, etc. Can we have it both ways?
