Report: Record Shares of Young Adults Have Finished Both High School and College | TRENDS IN HIGHER EDUCATION | Scoop.it

Record shares of young adults are enrolling in college and completing degrees there, according to a report released Monday by the Pew Research Center. The report, based on newly available U.S. Census data, says that in 2012, one-third of the nation’s 25- to 29-year-olds have completed at least a bachelor’s degree. This is the first time for such a level of educational attainment. Notably, the gains came at a time that the racial and ethnic make-up of the U.S. population was diversifying, a trend that some experts predicted would lead to a decline in educational attainment.

The demands of colleges and careers have changed over the last several years. There's an increase need of technological skills that may include coding, cyber security, IT, and design. College Readiness - Executive Summary

College Readiness - Executive Summary | TRENDS IN HIGHER EDUCATION | Scoop.it

The American Association of State Colleges and Universities released a new report titled, Serving America’s Future: Increasing College Readiness, which examines the college readiness challenge: Too many students are coming to college unprepared, and the problem is worsening. The report advocates a comprehensive approach to college readiness that public institutions can take to address this crisis. If colleges want more of their students to be ready for the academic challenges of higher education, then those institutions have to take a more direct role in elementary and secondary education. The report, written by a dozen college presidents and released at the association's annual meeting, calls on its member campuses to begin preparing students as early as preschool, helping children to acquire the building blocks of a successful academic career.

Book: Abelard to Apple and the Future of Higher Ed

Book: Abelard to Apple and the Future of Higher Ed | TRENDS IN HIGHER EDUCATION | Scoop.it

A wake-up call is the best way to describe this book: Abelard to Apple: The Fate of American Colleges and Universities (2011) by Richard Demillo.  Main ponts:

1) Traditional universities are no longer the gatekeepers. With the recent technological innovations that have created numerous learning options, combined with the higher cost of education, the value of a college education is in question.

2) Only the elite have ‘global’ brands that will hold their value, the remaining – the middle, have misjudged their value. Customers (families) will no longer be willing to, or able to pay for a college education.

3) As faculty-centered institutions turn their attention inward toward the needs of their profession, they become protective, rigid and inevitably irrelevant.

4) The middle-tier has many stakeholders making the system multi-sided and complex, which makes change cumbersome and onerous unless there is a strong leadership presence with a sound strategy.
