TEDx by Kiko Suarez: Eight dimensions of wise design that could change everything

The world is changing fast and we live in turbulent times, accelerated by the speed of technological change and rampant complexity. It seems like society has chosen to walk the Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom hierarchy in reverse, in search for answers in a sea of big data. Revolutions and recessions have caused analysts and policymakers to accept a “new normal” where many suffer the consequences of increasingly more difficult conditions of living. Bringing wisdom back to the center of our societal development, by focusing on 8 wisdom-centered design principles, could result in a better redefinition of our human condition and structures of living.

The three-year degree could save students up to 25 percent in tuition and fees, and get them into the job market more quickly.

One of the biggest challenges to big changes in the higher ed space has been the lack of impetus; the safety net for universities needs to be removed before they consider major shifts. In addition to lowering costs and time to completion, the three-year degree could improve the attainment rate.

The diagram tells a very interesting story for both open source and proprietary systems including the swelling and thinning of Blackboard through acquisitions. Another insight is the shift away from, and now back to a proliferation of platforms with the introduction of new proprietary, competency-based, and MOOC focused learning management systems which can be seen at the top of the diagram.

Are College Degrees the New Taxi Medallions?

Are College Degrees the New Taxi Medallions? | SMART HIGHER ED BLOG | Scoop.it
Education isn’t just about skills and professional preparedness. The competency model reduces education to discrete abilities and practical skills. It abases courses to the learning outcomes enumerated on their syllabi. And while it correctly diagnoses some of the maladies of higher ed (such as grade inflation and the inability to discern student aptitude from transcripts), competency models capitulate the ideals of liberal education to the quest for useful education. It cedes academia to job credentialing, and, ironically, entrenches the professional importance of graduating from college in order to succeed in the workforce. And it turns college degrees into licenses to work, making getting a job more expensive than ever. We know how that fared with taxi medallions.

Why MOOCs are Failing the People They're Supposed to Help

Why MOOCs are Failing the People They're Supposed to Help | SMART HIGHER ED BLOG | Scoop.it

MOOCs are a technology with potentially revolutionary implications for education, but without a precise plan for realizing that potential. One way of getting there could be for the leaders of the MOOC movement to look more closely at old methods, from when education was less massive, less open, and entirely offline.
