Outcomes assessment adds another layer.  Again, here, the principle seems clear: students should know upfront what the goals of the course are.  How much specificity is needed to get the job done is a judgment call, but it’s hard to argue with the concept.

It's true that the modern syllabus is a document with many goals and many purposes. Today's course instructors are not the only chefs stirring the course syllabus soup. Campus administrators have added their own required spices over the years. This article questions if those ingredients add value, or if they are simply boilerplate bloat.

Coursera co-founder Daphne Koller argues that online courses are more effective for teaching basic skills but expects traditional classroom experiences to hold their prestige and social benefits. In a conversation about the future of education with the Wall Street Journal, Koller advocated a blended model in which core content is learned online and classroom time is used for more interactive assignments. With Coursera, Koller plans to expand international enrollment with courses in languages other than English, and she’s gearing up for the first online MBA program at the University of Illinois, according to the article.

Adjuncts have their place in the academic life of an undergraduate, of course, but not in the first year or two of college. But they can be very helpful to students as they think about the transition to the workforce after college. Often adjuncts are working professionals in the career field that students want to eventually pursue and can assist in securing internships or jobs. And adjuncts who work full-time in careers outside of academia can usually give students a more realistic view of the workplace they’ll soon enter than full-time professors who are on campus all day.

The annual New Media Consortium Horizon Report’s K-12 2015 Edition, that provides insight into digital learning trends, named blended learning as a key topic to watch in the next two years. The trends included in the report were selected by 56 experts from 22 countries.Two teaching and learning trends expected to accelerate the use of educational technology in classrooms in a year or two, the report said, were the use of blended learning and STEAM (an acronym for science, technology, engineering, arts and math) education.Sometimes called hybrid learning, blended learning enables educators to pursue a variety of instructional models. Ideally, the technology allows the teacher to make the most of face-to-face time with students, leaving some more routine learning tasks to the computer.
