Long-term unemployed people, who have been out of work for 27 weeks or more, are typically well-educated but hampered in their job search by their time out of work.Higher education institutions should devise a mechanism to certify skills to assure employers that long-term unemployed individuals have what it takes to succeed in the workforce.Career services offices of universities can also be more proactive in helping long-term unemployed alumni get the skills and education they need to transition into new industries.

Due, in part, to the improved technologies, and the adaptation of more modernized teaching methodologies, students are increasingly able to fill gaps in their education experience, through online and blended learning offerings.

This provides faculty an opportunity to expand their teaching pedagogy to one of increased engagement. Faculty familiarity and increased use of technology, enables classroom integration with real-world events. Students can now be afforded access to applied best practices, instead of theory alone.
