'Noncognitive' Measures: The Next Frontier in College Admissions | TRENDS IN HIGHER EDUCATION | Scoop.it

With grades and test scores presenting a limited view of applicants' potential, admissions officers are looking for new tools to gauge students' noncognitive skills. Over the last decade, a handful of colleges have designed "noncognitive" assessments to measure attributes—like leadership and the ability to meet goals—that content-based tests do not. Succeeding in college often requires initiative and persistence, or what some researchers call "grit." Noncognitive measures are an attempt to gauge such qualities.

The Great American Higher Education Highway

It’s critical that institutional leaders begin to explore ways to innovate their institution before they miss their opportunity.
Missing the opportunity to implement minor innovations will result in institutions being forced to make massive changes, or simply losing control of the institutional operation altogether.
Though it’s currently a bumpy period for the postsecondary industry, the future is bright for institutions that can rethink their core product and approach to the marketplace.

Fulfilling all five of these goals will not solve all of higher education’s problems. But it would reduce costs (especially by cutting federal student financial aid) and enrollments, and would also at least marginally improve academic rigor and standards. Moreover, achieving these goals is revenue neutral or enhancing for governments.

The first challenge for organisations is ‘Intelligence’ and moving away from traditional approaches to data and insight. The second challenge is around ‘Collaboration’ and the re-design of cultures, networks, strategic partnerships and increasing co-creation. And the final challenge ‘Adaptability’ focuses on speeding up the commercialisation of innovation in order to bring bigger ideas to market faster."

"Transforming an organisational culture into one of openness and innovation won’t happen overnight. And it certainly won’t come about unless considerable thought is put into designing the new culture, developing innovation leaders and training every employee in a new way of thinking and behaving. Sadly, for many, the recent surveys indicate there is some way to go on the road to becoming a Next Generation Organisation and driving innovation-led growth.

 

Intelligence – 60% of major UK company directors admit their leadership teams fail to understand their customers.

Collaboration – 66% of major UK business leaders claim their current organisational structure makes it difficult to share knowledge and understanding.

Adaptability – 68% of UK corporates take just as long to innovate and get solutions to market now as they did five years ago.

 

Intelligence, Collaboration, Adaptability; all of these require something far more than facts and rulebooks. Put bluntly if you think that sentiment or soft skills have no place in business then innovation is never going to get beyond a note in your annual report or a marketing strapline."

The words ‘Open Educational Resources’ were synonymous with all that is good in the world of education in the past decade or so. However, I think that fortunately or otherwise OER have lost some of its romance as a movement among the community. There may still be 'die hard' fanatics who will deny this fact but in actuality many of us who have been doing research on the ground for the past few years have moved on to other things such as MOOC. Does this mean that the OER movement is dead? I guess it depends on who you ask.
