StateRail 1990 Cowan rail disaster (Hinch version) - YouTube

Share your videos with friends, family, and the world
Emily Wylie's insight:

My Mother and Father were both in the steam train involved in this crash and were two of the 100 people injured. This video highlights that a railway regulation of placing detonation devices on the track behind a disabled train to warn other trains of the disabled train ahead was not carried out. If this regulation was abided by the crash could have been avoided resulting in peoples lives not being lost.

Auto Safety Experts voice concern over Apple's CarPlay | Travelling with OHS and invesigation | Scoop.it
According to a new report, car safety experts aren't very convinced with Apple's new CarPlay in-car voice assistant.

Like the article states, if you are enabling people to 'safely' use their phones whilst driving you are putting communication and technology above driver concentration. Apple says this devices has minimized distraction, minimized is not zero distraction. There is a fine for using mobile phones whilst driving for a reason.

Work related stress

Work related stress | Travelling with OHS and invesigation | Scoop.it
By the term work related stress we mean the process that arises where work demands of various types and combinations exceed the person’s capacity and capability to cope.
Emily Wylie's insight:

To me work related stress is a major contribution to human error in the work force because I know that, be it at work or with university studies, I do not perform at my best when under stress. If stress became one of the focus points in companies and organisations and if actions were implemented to reduce stress in the work place, work place safety would increase, the amount on injures and errors would decrease and the general feel of the environment would become more inviting and encouraging.

Emily Wylie's insight:

Stress is definitely a hidden hazard and as it is not a physical thing that people can see it is often over looked. More attention should be brought towards the subject and great focus on the little things you can do for yourself to reduce workplace stress.

New Italy government investigates fresh collapses in ancient Pompeii | Travelling with OHS and invesigation | Scoop.it
ROME (Reuters) - Italy's culture minister demanded explanations on Sunday after more collapses this weekend in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii raised concerns about the state of one of the world's most
Emily Wylie's insight:

Pompeii is such a beautiful place full of interesting history. I was lucky enough to walk around pompeii in 2012. These fresh collapses has resulted in closures of various parts of the site. The collapses have created OHS issues within the site as people could have been injurded or killed if this occured when tourists or people who work at the site were present. Hopefully the investigations into the recent collapses will allow for methods of restoration to be formed where enviromental damage can be minimised so collapses are prevented in the future ensuring that people can enjoy this amazing bit of history for years to come.

Pompeii is just like any other world wide place to visit and can be dangerous in many ways according to OHS rules and set standards, though these are different around the world it is necessary for the safe movement of a person within and outside a certain site, especially one of old age, such as Pompeii

Emily Wylie's insight:

Investigations into the cause of adverse events, such as this one, can be used as a learning tool to improve the safety of alpine transportation. I feel that alpine safety is extremely important as if a situation arises where people are injured and need medical attention they are not as easily assessable as if they were involved in a road crash.

Ben Bishop's curator insight, July 16, 2014 8:00 AM

After each event such as this, a new legislation or rule/way of avoiding this mistake is put into place to make sure this doesn't happen again. This is to improve safety in more places not noticed before, this is why OHS and the investigation of accidents, deaths and injuries are very important to us all!
