Miss Violence is a vivid film, an allegory based on the current situation in Greece, describing the story of a troubled Greek family.

The story of the film is the following: On the day of her birthday, eleven-year-old Angeliki jumps off the balcony and falls to her death with a smile on her face. While the police and Social Services try to discover the reason for this apparent suicide, Angeliki’s family keeps insisting that it was an accident. What is the secret that young Angeliki took with her? Why does her family persist in trying to “forget” her and to move on with its life?

The FEDEORA award for the best film in Europe and the Mediterranean countries was awarded to the film by a group of the Federation of film critics in Europe and the Mediterranean Sea.

The sandy beaches that rim Ano Koufonissi's south coast give onto cerulean blue sea of a hue that seems confined to artists' palettes, seemingly impossible in reality. Hidden away between the larger Cycladic islands of Naxos and Amorgos, Koufonissia (plural) is made up of two tiny islets, Ano Koufonissi (Upper Koufonissi) and Kato Koufonissi (Lower Koufonissi), which are separated by a 200-metre sea channel. While Kato Koufonissi remains uninhabited, Ano Koufonissi, with its whitewashed Cycladic cottages, has a buzzing little community of 366. Locals live mainly from fishing – it is claimed that there are more boats than residents – there are no real roads and hardly any cars, so everyone either walks or cycles. Before 1980, there was no electricity either, and it is only over the last decade that Koufonissi has become a popular escape with Athenians in search of an unpretentious and inexpensive summer holiday. It's much loved by yachters too, who moor up their sailing boats along the seafront, to unwind after visiting the noisier and glitzier islands of Santorini and Mykonos.

Kranidi windmills

Three recently renovated windmills stand on a small hill above the town of Kranidi.

Waving from the distance, these beautiful tower mills invite guest for a travel through the time. The inhabitants constructed the windmills using wind driven wheels for milling grain.

 

Every windmill was built from bricks and then it was whitewashed. It had a metal cone shaped roof in the form of a small tower. A cloth cape with is twisted on the axis hanging out of the tower. The windmill has two impressive millstones, one on top of the other, grinded the grain.

Today, the municipality uses the windmills as a venue for its summer cultural events.

The Varvakeion High School physics team students in Athens, along with Dutch students, won an international competition held at the European Council for Nuclear Research (CERN) on the occasion of the institution’s 60th birthday, on July 1. "We were not anxious because we thought we had no chance of winning against our peers from countries with a tradition in the industry, such as the U.S., China or Germany," says the 17-year-old student, Nikolas Plaskovitis.

 Following the submission of 292 proposals from school groups around the world, two teams were selected to come to CERN to carry out their own experiments at a CERN beam line. The winners are the “Odysseus' Comrades” team from Varvakios Pilot School in Athens, and the team from Dominicus College in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The "Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire," more commonly known as CERN, is celebrating 60 years of science for peace: the Convention that led to the establishment of CERN in 1954 was signed on July 1, 1953 in Paris, under the auspices of UNESCO, by twelve founding Member States. See also CERN - From Electrons to Galaxies: Greek high schoolers Visit CERN

La ministre du Tourisme, Olga Kefalogianni, et le maire d'Athènes, Georges Kaminis, ont eu une réunion de travail mardi au ministère du Tourisme. 
Le ministre et le maire d'Athènes ont fait part de leur satisfaction face à la hausse importante du flux touristique à Athènes cet été et ont convenu de renforcer encore plus leur coopération afin qu'Athènes devienne une destination touristique autonome.
Mme Kefalogianni et M. Kaminis ont discuté dans le détail des moyens de coopération et de la collaboration entre le ministère du Tourisme et la municipalité d'Athènes en vue de la rencontre internationale de mille blogueurs touristiques et rédacteurs touristiques, TBEX 2014, qu'organise la municipalité à Athènes en octobre prochain.

Grâce à une promotion touristique ciblée sur des marchés-cible de l'étranger, en mettant l'accent sur les outils du Web, mais aussi sur les besoins des visiteurs du pays, le ministère du Tourisme ambitionne de faire de la Grèce un paradis d'hospitalité pour ses visiteurs, a déclaré la ministre, Olga Kefalogianni, depuis la tribune de cette manifestation.
Après avoir dressé un bilan de l'œuvre du ministère du Tourisme, qui a désormais deux ans d'action sous sa nouvelle forme, Mme Kefalogianni a assuré de la poursuite de l'action engagée pour attirer le plus grand nombre de touristes.
2013 a été une année de succès pour la Grèce, a noté Mme Kefalogianni, puisque d'une part les choix du ministère se sont avérés être les bons et, d'autre part, elle a été la preuve que le tourisme a transformé la crise en opportunités.
Pour la nouvelle année, la Grèce entend attirer 20 millions de touristes, un chiffre qui peut être porté à 22 millions si l'on ajoute les visiteurs de la croisière, a déclaré le SG de l'EOT, Panos Livadas, qui, analysant les actions marketing que suivra la Grèce pour la prochaine saison touristique, a expliqué qu'elles viseront à renforcer encore plus le produit touristique grec sur les marchés de la Chine, de la Russie, mais aussi du Brésil, outre bien sûr les marchés traditionnels.
Concernant d'ailleurs plus précisément le Brésil, Mme Kefalogianni a souligné que l'équipe nationale de football, qu'elle a félicitée pour sa qualification dans les 16 meilleures équipes du monde, est en cette période le meilleur ambassadeur de la Grèce à l'étranger, mais aussi tout particulièrement sur ce marché bien précis. Un large programme publicitaire est en cours en cette période à Sao Paolo.
Du côté du marché chinois, M. Livadas a parlé de messages déjà très positifs, après l'inauguration en plus de la ligne aérienne directe Shanghai-Grèce, informant en outre que des tours opérateurs présents sur le marché chinois examinent les possibilités d'une liaison directe Pékin-Athènes.
Enfin, concernant le marché russe, le taux de visas délivrés est très encourageant, avec une hausse observée de 65% par rapport à 2012.
En clôture, avec la saison touristique qui bat son plein, Mme Kefalogianni a adressé un appel aux représentants des collectivités locales de faire preuve d'un haut sentiment de responsabilité afin que le pays puisse répondre comme il se doit aux exigences accrues qu'engendre la venue des touristes.

The island of Crete, birthplace of the Renaissance master Domenicos Theotokopoulos who is better known by as El Greco, is kicking off a round of exhibitions in Greece for El Greco Year. The Greek tribute to the painter, marking the 400th anniversary since the old master's death, starts with the inauguration on June 20 of the exhibition "Domenikos Theotokopoulos between Venice and Rome" at the Historical Museum of Crete in Iraklio.

The exhibition is dedicated to the painter's Italian period and opened to the public on June 21. It will run to October 25. After this date it will be transferred to the Benaki Museum in Athens, which helped organise the exhibition, where it will run from November 21 until March 1, 2015.

Long, unkempt, greasy hair, bushy mustaches, unbuttoned silk shirts that show off hairy chests and gold chains; It might not be what Greeks like me want the rest of the world to think we look like, but – in the 1970s and 80s – this was how a foreigner would describe someone Greek.

The men who popularised this archetype were called "kamaki" – a Greek slang word for the kind of man who spends most of his time in tourist areas trying to pick up girls. Kissing a Greek girl back then would be synonymous to asking for her hand in marriage, but that wasn't the case for the English and Scandinavian girls visiting Greece in the summer.

In the years before the Greek military junta of 1967-74, Greece's unique offering of sea, sun and sand covered in semi-naked bodies led to a surge in tourism. The Sexual Revolution had just taken over the West, so young people from that part of the world travelled to Greece in search of a frantic summer of love.

“Doctors, lawyers, builders – all young men of my generation were 'kamakis'. You see, Greek girls didn’t really go out then,” John Klouvas, one of the most popular kamakis of the time, told me last time I visited the island of Rhodes – where he lives. “We were sexually hungry and AIDS didn't exist. I was born in 1955 – around 1970, when I was 15, mass tourism exploded. It was thanks to those foreign girls that we came of age. All the Greek girls wanted was to get married. All my friends ended up married to foreign girls.”

Ο Όμιλος Ηλείων για τον Πολιτισμό και την ανάπτυξη «Πολιτεία Ήλιδας-Ολυμπίας» σε συνεργασία με το Λιμενικό Ταμείο Κατακόλου για 5η συνεχή χρονιά αναλαμβάνει πρωτοβουλία να καλωσορίσει τους τουρίστες των κρουαζιεροπλοίων που έρχονται στο Κατάκολο.
Η προσπάθεια αυτή γίνεται προκειμένου να αναδειχθεί η πραγματική εικόνα της Ηλείας και της Ελλάδας στους τουρίστες που έρχονται στο λιμάνι του Κατακόλου καθημερινά, σε συνδυασμό με την προβολή αντιπροσωπευτικών μας προϊόντων αλλά και της φιλοσοφίας του Ξένιου Δία που άνθισε στην ιερή γη της Ολυμπίας!
Στο πλαίσιο αυτό την Τρίτη 15 Ιουλίου 2014, μετά το μεσημέρι, θα φιλοξενήσουμε τα κουραζιερόπλοια Queen Elizabeth, MSC Fantasia, Celebrity Eqyinox και Star Clipper στο Κατάκολο, με τον δικό μας παραδοσιακό ηλειακό τρόπο (με προϊόντα του νομού μας, φαγητά, κρασιά, εποχικά φρούτα, γλυκά αλλά και χορευτικά κ.α.). Στο χώρο θα υπάρχουν ενημερωτικά φυλλάδια και αφίσες με στόχο να προβάλλουμε τις ομορφιές, τον πολιτισμό και τα προϊόντα της Ηλείας.
Οι εκδηλώσεις θα πραγματοποιηθούν από τις 15.00 έως 18.00.
Σε αυτή μας την προσπάθεια έχουμε τη συμπαράσταση της Αντιπεριφέρειας Ηλείας (που μας δίνει και τα ενημερωτικά φυλλάδια), των περισσότερων δήμων της περιοχής μας, επιχειρήσεων, Συλλόγων και φορεων της Ηλείας.
Καλούμε τους παραγωγούς, τους κατοίκους και τους επισκέπτες της Ηλείας να συμμετέχουν σε αυτήν τη γιορτή φιλοξενίας και προβολής τόσο της Ηλείας όσο και των προϊόντων της προκειμένου να αναδείξουμε την πραγματική εικόνα του τόπου μας.

C'est une grande statue de femme ailée qui représente la déesse de la victoire, Niké. "La Victoire de Samothrace" a retrouvé sa place au Louvre, mardi. Après dix mois de restauration, la célèbre sculpture grecque, qui date du 2e siècle avant notre ère, a regagné son socle, qu'elle occupe depuis 1883. Les visiteurs vont bientôt pouvoir la découvrir sous un nouveau jour, en haut du monumental escalier Daru.

Retrouver l'éclat mais garder la patine. "L'idée, c'était de la nettoyer mais en tenant compte du temps qui passe sur une œuvre", explique Ludovic Laugier, qui a supervisé la restauration. On distingue donc le marbre blanc de Paros, au grain très fin, mais aussi la patine blonde de la statue, marquée par le temps.

More than 30 food businesses from Greece and Cyprus participated in New York City’s largest summer food show that included more than 2,730 exhibitors from all around the world.

The 60th Summer Fancy Food Show came to an end at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York with 2,730 specialty food makers, importers and entrepreneurs representing the latest new products and trends from 49 countries, marking the largest show to date. The event that attracted 28,000 buyers took place June 29–July 1, 2014, amid record demand for specialty food.

Thousands of buyers from top names in U.S. retail and restaurants including Whole Foods, Kroger, Dean & DeLuca, Gourmet Garage, Mollie Stone’s Markets, were present at the event.

Americans have a growing appetite for specialty food with U.S. sales reaching $88.3 billion in 2013, a record high for the fourth year in a row and a jump of 18.4 percent since 2011.

Greek food manufacturers and distributors attracted major attention from media and attendees proving that Greek food products are starting to receive their deserved attention in a nation that praises the Mediterranean diet, but it’s not familiar with many Greek food brands that offer just that.

Trop souvent et trop longtemps considéré comme un intellectuel de bureau, éloigné de la tribune, Isocrate mérite très certainement une étude renouvelée, tant sa pensée politique s’est affirmée, avec force souvent et avec subtilité à l’occasion. Maître de rhétorique, d’abord proche des sophistes, Isocrate a, durant sa très longue vie (436-338), assisté à nombre d’événements qui devaient altérer ou réformer la démocratie athénienne (guerre du Péloponnèse, dissolution de la ligue de Délos en 404/3 et création de la seconde Confédération maritime en 378, guerre des Alliés en 357-355 et ascension de Philippe II de Macédoine dans ces mêmes années 350).

SOME SAUSAGE-MAKING NOTES:

Make sure everything you deal with — meat, liquids, equipment — is very cold, as in close to freezing. This really matters, not so much for sanitation, although that’s important, but for the final texture of your sausage. Warm ingredients won’t bind well.If you don’t have a sausage-grinder and a sausage stuffer, I really don’t recommend you try this recipe. But if you must, you can pulse the meat in small batches in a food processor and stuff it through a wide funnel.You will need hog casings for this sausage, although I suppose if you kept kosher and wanted to skip the pork shoulder and use sheep casings, that’d work fine. Soak 5 to 6 lengths of hog casing (about 1o to 15 feet) in warm water for at least 30 minutes before you begin stuffing.You will need a rack to hang these links on while they are drying. A hand-wash drying rack works well.You may need string to tie off the links, if you need to hang them in a way that doesn’t allow your twisted links to stay twisted. Have this handy, along with scissors.You will also need a needle to prick your sausages once they are hanging — this is to release any trapped air. You will see air pockets on some of your sausages. Prick these with your needle. Sterilize it in the burner of your stovetop!Try not to eat them the same day. All sausages taste better the day after they’ve “cured” in the fridge overnight. These sausages will in fact cure a bit because of the Instacure, but even without it the link with firm up and hold its shape better after it rests.

Makes 5 pounds of sausage, about 15 to 20 links

Prep Time: 3 hours

Cook Time: 3 hours, if smoking

1 1/2 pounds lamb or venison trimmings2 1/2 pounds pork or wild boar1 pound pork fat32 grams kosher salt, about 3 tablespoons4 grams Instacure No. 1, about 1 rounded teaspoon (optional)25 grams sugar, about 2 rounded tablespoons5 tablespoons minced fresh garlic1 tablespoon ground coriander seed1 tablespoon cracked black pepper2 tablespoons fennel seeds1 tablespoon crushed dried oregano2 teaspoons dried thyme3 tablespoons grated fresh orange zest1/2 cup white or red wineHog casings

Chop your pork and lamb into rough, 1-inch chunks. Mix in the salt, curing salt (if using) and sugar and grind through a coarse die on your grinder. Put this in the fridge overnight if possible or for at least an hour. The step helps the sausage bind to itself when you stuff it.Set aside 1/2 of the coriander, black pepper and fennel seeds in a small bowl. Soak your hog casings in warm water. Put the wine in the fridge. Make sure all your grinding gear is cold.Mix the remaining spices with the meat and fat and grind the meat a second time into a bowl. You can grind coarse again or go fine. Your choice. I do half-and-half. Set the bowl for the meat into another bowl full of ice if your room is warmer than 70ºF. Once it’s ground, put the meat in the freezer and clean up.Get out your stand mixer and find the heavy paddle to it (not the dough hook). If you don’t have one, put the meat mixture in a large bin so you can mix it by hand. Add the orange zest, reserved spices and the wine and mix the sausage well for 2 minutes, or until it forms a sticky, cohesive paste. If you are doing this with your hands, they should ache from the cold.Get out your sausage stuffer, which if you’ve been smart has been living in your fridge or freezer for the past few hours. Fit it with the appropriate tube and stuff the sausage. Do it all at once before you twist it into links.To twist into links, start at one end and compress the meat into the casing, then tie off the casing. Measure out a good-sized link, then pinch with your fingers. Do the same another good-sized link down the coil. Once you have them both pinched, twist several times to tighten the link well. Repeat on down the line of the coil, then tie off the final link after compressing it, too. Once you’ve finished, hang the links so your twisting does not come undone, or tie off each link with string. Use the needle to prick any air pockets, and compress the meat in the casing to fill those pockets; be careful or you can rupture the casing if you do this too roughly.Hang your sausages to dry for about 2 hours in a normal room, only 1 hour if the room is warmer than 75ºF. Ideally, you hang the links overnight at about 40ºF.

Greece is the most popular tourist destination among Austrians this summer, Austrian paper Der Standard wrote in its weekend edition, citing data by domestic travel groups.

 According to the biggest Austrian travel agency Verkehrsburo, Greece ranks first (15 percent) among the top destinations for Austrians this summer, followed by Turkey (12.7 percent), Spain (12.1 percent), Italy (7.9 percent), the United States (5.9 percent) and Croatia (3.4 percent).

 Regarding bookings, Greece has recorded a double digit rise of 12.3 percent, with Croatia coming in second with a 2.4 percent increase.

 More than 400,000 Austrians on average visit Greece every year.

Tην Ελληνική Ολυμπιακή Επιτροπή επισκέφτηκε ο Πρόεδρος της Διεθνούς Ολυμπιακής Επιτροπής Τόμας Μπαχ στο πλαίσιο του ταξιδιού του στην Αθήνα.
Τον υποδέχτηκε ο Πρόεδρος της ΕΟΕ Σπύρος Καπράλος με τον Γενικό Γραμματέα Μανώλη Κατσιαδάκη. Ο επικεφαλής του Ολυμπιακού κινήματος είχε επίσης ιδιαίτερες συναντήσεις με το μέλος της ΔΟΕ Λάμπη Νικολάου και με τον Πρόεδρο της Διεθνούς Ολυμπιακής Ακαδημίας Ισίδωρο Κούβελο, ο οποίος του παρουσίασε όλες τις δράσεις της ΔΟΑ αλλά και το έργο που έχει γίνει τα τελευταία πέντε χρόνια από την Εθνική Ολυμπιακή Ακαδημία της Ελλάδας, της οποίας ηγείται, προσφέροντας του και το αναμνηστικό μετάλλιο της ΕΘΝ.Ο.Α..

Τη Δευτέρα 9 Ιουνίου 2014, η Singapore Airlines, -ο εθνικός αερομεταφορέας της Σιγκαπούρης, μία από τις λίγες αεροπορικές εταιρίες 5 αστέρων καθώς και ο πρώτος πελάτης του Airbus A380, του μεγαλύτερου επιβατηγού αεροσκάφους στον κόσμο-, εγκαινίασε τις απευθείας πτήσεις της από τη Σιγκαπούρη προς το Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος.
 Συγκεκριμένα, από τις 9 Ιουνίου έως και τις 9 Οκτωβρίου 2014, η Singapore Airlines θα πραγματοποιεί δυο φορές την εβδομάδα απευθείας πτήσεις από Αθήνα προς Σιγκαπούρη και αντίστροφα, παραμένοντας έτσι η μόνη αεροπορική εταιρεία που θα πραγματοποιεί απευθείας πτήσεις από την Ελλάδα προς την καρδιά της Ασίας, τη Σιγκαπούρη. 
 Οι πτήσεις θα πραγματοποιούνται κάθε Δευτέρα και Πέμπτη με αεροσκάφη τύπου Boeing 777-200ER. Ειδικότερα, η πτήση από Σιγκαπούρη προς Αθήνα με αριθμό SQ382 θα αναχωρεί από τη Σιγκαπούρη στις 02.05 με ώρα άφιξης στην Αθήνα στις 08.30 και η πτήση από Αθήνα προς Σιγκαπούρη με αριθμό SQ381, θα αναχωρεί από Αθήνα στις 13.00 με ώρα άφιξης στη Σιγκαπούρη στις 04.55 την επομένη μέρα.

Avec le soutien du Programme Européen GRUNDTVIG pour l'éducation des Adultes, l'Assistante Grecque Vassiliki KOUZI donnera une conférence dansée sur le thème des différentes danses grecques traditionnelles: Kalamatianos, Tsamikos, Karagouna, Syrtos, Hasaposervikos, mais aussi le Syrtaki!.... Un véritable tour de ce magnifique pays, depuis la Thrace jusqu'à la Crète en passant par les îles de la mer Egée et les îles Ioniennes. Au total, une dizaine de danses à découvrir, avec en bonus, la possibilité pour le public de se joindre à la dernière danse, pour quelques pas dans la bonne humeur!
